Meet Claude Junior Cheta, a Junior Account Executive. As part of our career stories series, Claude has shared his journey in healthcare communications and what he does in his role. Here's part one of his story! ➡ How did you hear about Healthcare Communications? During my industrial placement at Takeda UK and Ireland, I first learned about the PM Society and its resources and support for professionals in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. After returning to university, I was curious to learn more, which led me to attend the 2023 Careers event. At the event, I met Amir (European Talent Lead at Syneos Health), who introduced me to the healthcare communications side of the pharmaceutical industry. From our conversation, I realised that working in an agency would expose me to the wide range of activities healthcare agencies deliver and would be a great place to start my career. ➡ What area of Healthcare communications do you work in? I work in public relations, blending creativity with data-driven insights to craft impactful stories. I create communications that enhance understanding of health issues and treatments while shaping perceptions among key stakeholders. I contribute to campaigns that raise disease awareness or share insightful scientific information with healthcare professionals. I've worked on thought leadership campaigns that help organisations convey their vision to the public. I have also leveraged celebrity engagement to reach wider audiences, using well-known figures to address important healthcare issues in a relatable way. ➡ What does a typical day at work look like? My day revolves around translating complex medical data into clear, impactful messages that resonate with both healthcare professionals and the public. A dedicated account team supports each client, and I work closely with my assigned teams to achieve strategic objectives. My typical day is fast-paced and collaborative. I start by checking in with my teams or the client to provide status updates, then identify key priorities and areas for progress. This often involves delivering creative assets, developing messaging for new campaigns, and creating patient-focused content. I also liaise with the advertising and creative teams to ensure our goals are clear and aligned, enabling us to deliver the best results for our clients. You Never Know… I still remember the first interview when I was considering joining #MSD. Dr. Sharon Moshayof, who founded the HR function at MSD Israel, did an incredible job of "selling" the company and spoke highly of career development in the company. She said that if you very good at what you do, "The sky is the limit." But you never know, right? You never know if the company you're joining just talks the talk or actually walks the walk. In surveys that ask, "On a scale from 1 to 10, how likely are you to recommend a friend to join our company?" I consistently give MSD a 10. Of course it's not always rainbows and butterflies — there are challenging times too — but I believe my 10 is well-earned. I could give countless examples: * Yossi BenAmram made me part of his leadership team, even though I had zero experience working in a commercial company. * Steffen Brygger Lund, MBA, trusted me to lead policy in Russia, despite the fact that I wasn't Russian and didn’t speak the language. * Jan Van Acker took a chance on me, even though I had no regional experience and no policy experience in any of his Asia Pacific markets. * Michael Pergine appointed me as Head of Corporate Affairs for Asia Pacific, even though my managerial experience was quite limited at the time. I've also had the privilege of taking chances on people who went on to do amazing work within the company, whether in projects, gigs or in their new roles. But I want to share one standout example of why I would absolutely recommend working at #MSD to a friend: In September 2019, I met with Jeffrey May, then head of Global Public Policy at Merck & Co. Inc, and pitched an idea. I suggested that our global policy function should lead the way and harness the power of digital, data, and analytics. I proposed running a couple of pilots and reassessing after we saw some results. A few months later, we did see results, and true to his word, Jeff provided significant budget and 4 FTEs to bring the Global Public Policy Digital, Data, and Analytics vision to life. Now, ask yourself: 1. How open is your organization to listening to—and acting on—new ideas? 2. When you hear about talent development in your company, does it feel genuine? Do you see it in action? 3. How many managers do you know who are bold enough to take a leap of faith and create a function that didn’t exist in the industry? (We called it the "Knowledge and Innovation Hub.") 4. In your gut, how many managers would take a personal chance on you? If you’re happy with your answers, you’re in the right place! And if that’s the case, I invite you to share your experience with your own "10" workplace. In the photo: Jeff and I in his DC office😀. #Merck, #career, #talent

The paths we least expect are the ones we are meant to follow. 🛣 Early in my career, I applied for a part-time job at a pharmaceutical company to help pay my master’s tuition in communications and journalism. Everyone in the office was a pharmacist, doctor, biochemist, or biologist—the backgrounds you’d expect in a pharma company! I felt like the odd one out with my non-traditional background and thought: - Nobody will take a chance on me. - I don't have the experience. - I don’t have the relevant degree. However, this part-time job paved the way for a long and fulfilling career, as I stayed with the company for 17 years. It also laid the foundation for my current consulting venture in healthcare communications, of which I am very proud. ------- I often doubted my decisions and questioned if I was heading in the right direction. Yet, it's these uncertain paths that led me to many fulfilling destinations. What did I do? - I decided to have a purpose. - I expanded my knowledge. I wanted to be among the best in health communications. - I worked on functional projects with diverse teams. - I accepted setbacks. - I was grateful for any opportunity. ------- My advice ✔ Whatever you do, do it with a #purpose. Purpose transforms our journey from random steps into meaningful actions. ✔ Do what you are good at and expand your knowledge. ✔ Be open to adjusting your plans. ✔ Be grateful. ------- Did you follow an unexpected path? Trust your own process and find #purpose in every step, even when the road ahead seems unclear. 🌞

As we continue the #MedComms Day celebrations, we are excited to share Holly Joscelyne's experience working in the sector. Holly is a Senior Account Director at Cuttsy and Cuttsy and she kindly answered some questions about her career for us. ➡ How did you get into MedComms? I fell into med comms! I did a Business Management degree at university which included an industry placement year. Although I was unsure of my career path at the time, for my placement I landed a position in the communications team of a pharmaceutical company. In that role, I worked with an external agency who offered me a job after graduating. I dabbled in similar roles outside of healthcare but nothing gave me the purpose or motivation like this industry does - for me, it's so important to believe in what you do! ➡ What do you do in your role? My role is incredibly diverse, but essentially, I serve as the main point of contact for our clients. I listen to their challenges, collaborate with a talented team to develop solutions, and manage projects from initial scoping to final delivery. I also collaboratively lead our client services team, mentoring team members, supporting the implementation of new processes and driving business growth. ➡ What do you enjoy about your work? No two days are the same in agency life. It's fast-paced and challenging - which is exactly why I enjoy it! The variation in work keeps things interesting, but the most rewarding part is hearing the impact a piece of work has. From a simple visual that helps to explain a complex medical process in an easy-to-understand way, through to a far-reaching co-created educational campaign. Whatever it is, when I hear how it has helped and supported someone, it reminds me why I am proud of what I do! In our last post, we focused on how to leverage your personal development plan (PDP) when you’ve already identified what role you are targeting. If you are unclear about what you want to do next, no worries! You can tailor one of the goals in your PDP to help you determine what direction you may or may not want to go. We all enjoy some of our job responsibilities more than others. Perhaps you’re ready to spend less time on the road and more time at home but still want to stay close to the science? Or perhaps you enjoy working with pipeline molecules more than commercially available products? Maybe working on clinical trials is more your speed? Take time to reflect on the aspects of your role (or pervious roles) that you truly enjoy or areas in which you would like to grow your expertise. Do you know what opportunities within your company that align with your likes/dislikes? If not, this is an opportune time to ramp up your networking skills and learn about the possibilities. Who have you met in the company that does something interesting that you believe aligns with your interests? Set up a 30-minute coffee (or virtual coffee) to learn more about the details of their role. You may find it is not what you thought it would be, or you may learn it’s just what you want to do… Regardless, you will learn something. I guarantee they will help you make other connections with colleagues that would be happy to discuss their role with you. Connect via LinkedIn. Let the networking begin!
