It’s time to shift our focus in healthcare. We need to stop treating health as an “individual problem”. Feeling unwell? You go to the doctor. They diagnose, prescribe, and treat you. That’s good healthcare, right? Well this is where we need to take a closer look. Every step in this process focuses on the individual. Health becomes a personal problem to solve, one patient at a time. All our data and our treatments tend to focus on the idea that it is the individual that is broken and needs to be fixed. But here’s the science is clear: Health is NOT just an individual problem. It’s a social phenomenon. The majority of the factors that contribute to poor health aren’t rooted in bad luck, but in our environment, the way we live within our social context: 🍔 Eating the wrong food. (We are affected by the diet of our friends and family) 🚬 Smoking. (People like to smoke with others) 🍷 Drinking too much. (Your most likely to share the drinking habits of your friends) 🧠 Isolation leading to mental health issues. These issues don’t exist in a vacuum: they’re influenced by our surroundings, social norms, and the communities we live in. But our healthcare systems are set up to focus on and treat people in isolation, instead of addressing the social structures that shape their health outcomes. Here’s the good side: many of the activities that improve our health are also social in nature. 🏃♀️ Engaging in sports with others. 🥗 Preparing a meal together. 🎤 Singing, dancing, 🤗 Discussing our problems. It’s human nature to normalise behaviour based on those around us. That’s why pressuring people to change their habits rarely works. Instead, we need to bring people together around things they already enjoy and challenges they want to tackle together. If we want a healthier society, we need a healthcare system that treats communities, not just individuals. By improving the social ecosystems around us, we can create real, lasting change for everyone. It’s time we rethink healthcare, because it’s often our society that makes people sick. 😀 If we want to keep people healthy and happy we need to treat society, not just individuals. 👩⚕️ It’s time to rethink healthcare, because when we improve the health of our communities, we improve the health of us all. 🤔 What do you think? Can we shift towards a community-based approach to wellbeing? Share your thoughts below! 💡 I’m creating a new health & wellbeing innovation community aimed at preventing people from getting sick in the first place. 🌍 Today’s #WorldHealthDay, with the theme 'My Health My Right,' emphasises that access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right for everyone, everywhere. The World Health Organization underscores the critical need for governments to prioritise health investment with an additional US$ 200–328 billion needed yearly to scale up primary health care in low- and middle-income countries. In addition to this WHO call to action, I want us to also ponder on the state of #UniversalHealthCoverage (UHC) here in the United Kingdom, which has long been celebrated for achieving UHC since 1948 through the NHS. 🚪 Access: How accessible is healthcare when GP appointments are difficult to secure promptly? This appears to be a recurring theme with people I encounter every day in my work. I’ve watched people forgo the healthcare they need because of this difficulty in access. How badly is the UK falling behind on #healthcareaccess? 🔍 Quality: Today, it's common for many GPs to limit appointment duration to just 15 minutes, allowing for only one complaint per visit. But is this brief window enough to deliver comprehensive and #qualityhealthcare for all? Considering that patients often present with multiple concerns, can addressing just one complaint per appointment effectively meet their holistic diagnostic and treatment needs? 🌟 Equity: Do disparities persist, with higher-income areas enjoying better healthcare access compared to lower-income areas? Working in a low-income community, I see individuals struggle to access local GP services. Meanwhile, residents in higher-income communities often find it easier to secure appointments and receive timely care. 💰 Financial Protection: Are individuals forced into catastrophic health spending by resorting to private healthcare, especially with recent announcements like the £99 private ambulance service? With the rising cost of living, out-of-pocket spending on private healthcare could lead to catastrophic healthcare spending for many households. On this World Health Day 2024, I unite my voice with advocates globally to urge all stakeholders to reflect on these challenges and take necessary actions to safeguard #UHC gains in the UK and halt this regression. Together, let’s make 'My Health My Right' a tangible reality for all. #WorldHealthDay #HealthForAll #MyHealthMyRight #UniversalHealthCoverage🌐
