Meet this month’s employee spotlight, Oliver! 👋 Oliver is our Health Sciences Advancement Officer and joined the Curtin Advancement team last year to help bring many of our wonderful health sciences projects to life. We caught up with Oliver to learn more about some of the projects he is currently working on. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐲? I love how every day is so different, whether it’s the work I’m doing or the people I meet. Engaging with those who are directly impacted by what Advancement does, even the most mundane tasks feel like a meaningful piece of the bigger picture. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰? Many exciting things are happening in Health Sciences at the moment! I’m starting to plan Curtin’s booth for this year’s Telethon Family Festival. It will be my first time managing it, but I have a wealth of experience to draw upon. I volunteered last year shortly after I started at Curtin, and it was wonderful to interact with families involved in some of Curtin’s wonderful research projects. I’m looking forward to putting my own spin on it this year! 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤? I’m very much into rock climbing. I’m actually petrified of heights so I started climbing as a way to face that fear, but I grew to really love the physicality of it and the problem-solving. It’s so much fun bringing new people into the sport and watch them crush it, especially when they initially doubt their abilities. Scott Charlton, CEO at Sydney Airport, joined host Ellen Derrick, Managing Partner, Consulting, Deloitte Australia, for a wide-ranging conversation about the path to joining the C-Suite, the strategies he has employed to drive growth and sustainability, and the lessons learned throughout his executive career. "I always solve problems backwards. So I don't start at the beginning and think, well, how do I get there in the end?" said Scott. "I always start with the outcome that we're gonna do. And then I try to work backwards every single scenario or every single step that I have to do." "It wasn’t supposed to happen this way…" When I first started my journey, I didn’t know that a simple decision would change the course of my life. Transitioning from science education to pharmacy seemed like a bold leap at the time, but it was meant to happen—it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. The defining moment came during a semester when I found myself overwhelmed by academic challenges, responsibilities, and personal expectations. There was one particular day that stood out. The pressure was mounting, and I remember sitting down, feeling completely stuck. It wasn’t a breakthrough moment of success—it was the moment I realized that growth happens not when everything is going smoothly, but when you're tested. That day, I chose to keep pushing forward, knowing that I was capable of more. As I emerged as the Vice President of Pharmacy Save a Life, I realized the importance of stepping into leadership, learning, and guiding initiatives that could make a difference,including my involvement in various church leadership roles. My proudest achievement isn’t tied to a single event, but to the ability to push through challenges and stay focused on the bigger picture. One key lesson I’ve learned: *Growth isn’t about waiting for the perfect conditions—it’s about pushing through when things get tough.* We don’t always get the ideal circumstances, but resilience, learning from every experience, and stepping into new opportunities is how we expand our path. Now, I’m more motivated than ever to continue expanding my path. I’m eager to learn more, step into greater leadership roles, and elevate my contribution to the healthcare space. For me, this journey is about continuously evolving, embracing challenges, and seeking opportunities to make an impact. When I decided to pursue a career in health administration, looking for a program designed to shape the future leaders of healthcare was easy. However, finding a program that would work best for me was a bit harder. The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Master of Science in Health Administration (MSHA) program stood out for many reasons:  ✅ Cohort Model: The cohort model has been invaluable to my growth. Learning alongside a diverse, passionate group of peers has fostered collaboration, accountability, and a true sense of community. Together, we’ve built relationships that will last a lifetime.  ✅ Alumni Support: UAB's alumni network is second to none. The willingness of graduates to share their experiences, mentor current students, and open doors is a testament to the strength and generosity of this community.  ✅ Focus on Practical Application: UAB emphasizes hands-on learning that bridges the gap between the classroom and real-world challenges. Between the workforce program in year 1, summer internships, and a one-year residency, I knew UAB’s MSHA program would provide me with the skills to excel in my career. Now, as an MSHA student, I can undoubtedly say this program provides even more than I could have hoped for. I have grown as a professional and have made lifelong friendships. Daniel Andreu credits the University of West Florida's Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) program with significantly transforming his career. From the outset, Daniel was driven by a desire to create meaningful change in the healthcare industry. Throughout the program, he quickly learned the importance of defining his career aspirations and understanding the organizational culture he wanted to join. Engaging with leaders across the Southeast was pivotal to his professional development. As Daniel neared his final semester, he transitioned into a new role, a move he attributes to the guidance and support of his cohort and instructors. "The program really did change my career path for the best," Daniel says, emphasizing how the MHA program taught him to ask the right questions and strategically approach his career growth. Daniel’s career aspirations evolved from specific goals to a broader mission of making a lasting impact. His decade of experience in three different hospital systems reinforced the importance of being part of a team with a shared mission. "It’s this sense of purpose and collaboration that makes the journey truly worthwhile," he reflects. For those considering an MHA, Daniel emphasizes the program's value: "This program equips you with the ethos and skills of a healthcare leader. You’ll bridge theory with real-world application, and your classmates’ diverse experiences will become one of your greatest resources." 💡 Navigating Career Crossroads 💡 I was recently asked in an interview, “Why are you finishing your Master’s in Healthcare Administration while looking for opportunities outside of healthcare?” It’s a great question! My response: I’ve always believed in the power of adaptability and continuous learning. While my focus has been healthcare, we all know that industries evolve, and sometimes they can be volatile. That’s why I’m open to applying my skills across different markets. I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge in my Master's program—from leadership and strategic planning to process improvement—that is truly transferable. For me, finishing what I start is non-negotiable, and completing this degree is about honoring that commitment. But it’s not just about healthcare; it’s about the business acumen I’ve gained along the way and how those skills can bring value no matter where I go. 30 Years with Insperity: A Journey of Growth, Gratitude, and Purpose Yesterday marked an incredible milestone for me—30 years with Insperity. On November 14, 1994, I took the first step in a journey that would challenge and shape me in ways I could have never imagined. Over the past three decades, I’ve had the privilege of working with remarkable individuals who inspire me every day. I’ve learned from exceptional mentors, collaborated with talented peers, and led teams that never fail to amaze me with their passion and dedication. Insperity has been more than just a workplace; it has been a place where I’ve grown personally and professionally, a place where our collective mission—to help businesses succeed so communities prosper —has always been at the heart of what we do. Reflecting on 30 years, I feel immense gratitude: • For the lessons learned through challenges that pushed me to grow. • For the pride felt in celebrating our successes, big and small. • For the incredible relationships built along the way. What’s kept me here for three decades? The belief that what we do truly matters. The joy of seeing the impact of our work on businesses and lives.
