Leaders often emphasize policy changes as the primary means to drive progress, but this focus can overlook a crucial element: changing minds. Policies set the rules, but they do not necessarily shift the underlying beliefs and attitudes of individuals. Without genuine buy-in or cultural change, new policies can encounter resistance, slow implementation, or even backfire. When leaders prioritize changing minds, they engage in persuasion and education, fostering an environment where policies are not just enforced but embraced. This approach can create sustainable change by addressing the root causes of societal issues, rather than just the symptoms. Leaders who inspire people to adopt new perspectives can build a foundation of shared values, making policy changes more effective and long-lasting. While policy shifts are necessary, they are often limited in scope without a corresponding change in public attitudes. The real challenge for leaders is to influence not only what people do but also how they think. By focusing on changing minds, leaders can cultivate a culture of progress, driving transformation from within rather than imposing it from above.

This is such a great article!! I reiterate my point about the title missing the point. Leaders that change policy are managers, we’re not really leaders until we change minds. A previous leadership mentor of mine gave the equation leadership =engagement + influence. If we’re not engaging and influencing we’re not leading. The notions behind bias and regression to habits and the resistance to change are directly aligned to the philosophy behind my business values and the efforts we’re making to change the way organisations view the coordination of technical and commercial aspects through more effective leadership
