As Generative AI technology accelerated our way to consume new information, design systems has becoming more crucial for organizations to convey consistent brand languages for their digital products and offering services across multiple channels and platforms. Successful implementations of design system require cross-functional collaboration more than just design and development team effort. One key factor to foster this collaboration is to incorporate data measurements to help inform transparent and cross-team aligned design decisions throughout the design process.
During my time at Sam’s Club, where I collaborated within a cross-functional team to optimize their internal tool development effort by 50% by revamping existing mobile app through modern design system integration. Here is how we approached to achieve our metrics:
📌 Shared Understanding: Ground teams discussions in data to set up a common language and objective baseline and development of shared ownership that align project priorities and move beyond based on customer needs, business goals, and technical constraints.
📌 Stakeholder Alignment: Leverage data-driven insights, designers can communicate with stakeholders with justifying design decisions backed up by data to help facilitate the technical implementation of the design system, ensuring stakeholders alignments with broader customer buy-in.
📌 Iterative Refinement: Leveraging usage metrics, user feedback, and analytics, cross-functional teams can collaborate to identify areas for design improvements by performing data-informed adjustments, fostering a collaborative culture to continuously maintain and evolve the design system.
📌 Prioritization and Trade-offs: With limited resources and competing priorities, teams must make trade-offs. Data-informed decision-making helps teams to objectively evaluate the impact and importance of different component features and design elements, which empower them to prioritize roadmap planning more effectively.
To sum up, embracing data-driven approach can help organizations foster an collaborative environment where designers, engineers, product managers, and stakeholders can work closely together to shape a cohesive design language through the development of the customer-centric design system.
