Sharing for reach: Dave Snowden is holding a 2-day "Cynefin & Sense-making" workshop in Seattle in November. https://lnkd.in/g-Ye4xde Along with Simon Wardley's value chain mapping, Dave Snowden's sense-making tools have impacted my thinking tremendously over the last several years. (I imagine both of them might respond to that sentiment with, "You need to get out more," which may be true.) While I recognize there are many valuable techniques out there, I have to emphasize how deeply these approaches have shaped my thinking. They've consistently brought clarity and results in ways that have resonated with me on a personal and professional level. If you have the opportunity to attend, I think you'll learn something fantastic. #cynefin #sense-making #sensemaking #complexity #complexadaptivesystems

Neuroscientists call it "context switching" when you lose productivity switching from one task to another, which brings us to #6 in the series of what Agile Internal audit is about. The full list is part of my white paper: download for free at www.agile-ia.com. We just cited neuroscience, but look: it isn't rocket science to say that humans are bad at multitasking. The harder question is, what structures and incentives do your teams have to limit work in progress? An IA manager at a huge investment bank asked me this: "The performance criteria for my promotion say that I have to be good at juggling many things at once, but you're telling me I should limit work in progress? I don't get it." And she was absolutely right to push back. Becoming more Agile requires addressing how you measure people's performance.

Interesting article giving an overview of heuristics, which is a decision making process we use when making split second decisions (such as in a self-defense scenario) https://lnkd.in/g375acY7.).

“What is this problem fundamentally about?” Unlocking the secret to effective problem-solving requires tapping into the potential of interpretive questions. Far from simply being useful tools, interpretive questions act as catalysts, compelling us to delve beyond surface-level symptoms and arrive at the core of any given issue. In practical terms, when an issue arises, the preferable course of action is not merely to react. Instead, take a measured approach—pose an interpretive question: “What is this problem fundamentally about?” The answer may well uncover previously unconsidered patterns and presumptions. As reflective practitioners in the corporate sphere, it is vital to periodically reassess our approach to problem-solving. Employing interpretive questions not only enhances our capacity for critical thinking but also facilitates the unleashing of our inherent creativity. They serve as a compass, directing us towards unpaved paths of novel insights and innovation. Embrace the strategic use of interpretive questions. Ask, “What is this problem fundamentally about?” Embark on this exciting journey of discovery. Delve in and begin the process of uncovering hidden layers of understanding.

The Illusion of Work: Are We Truly Creating? In today’s fast-paced world, there’s a pervasive illusion that we’re all diligently working, busy with important tasks, meetings, and goals. But if we reflect deeply, it often feels like we’re more invested in showing that we’re working than in creating genuine impact. This is true across many fields, including Data Science, Artificial intelligence, and Machine Learning. We’re continually adding to our list of achievements, but are we genuinely pushing the boundaries of what’s possible? If our work is truly groundbreaking, why aren’t the results more visible and impactful? These questions challenge us to re-evaluate our approach to innovation. How do we ensure that our efforts are focused on real creation rather than on the appearance of productivity? More importantly, where do we begin if we wish to break this cycle? Many times, projects start with great enthusiasm but fade due to a lack of direction, commitment, or resources. To make genuine progress, we need to confront these challenges head-on, identify the roadblocks, and strategize effectively to reach meaningful milestones.

I've been listening to Understanding Complexity by Prof Scott E Page, and delving further into my studies came across this great article about embracing complexity: "What prevents us from dealing effectively with complexity? The biggest issue, in my mind, is that humans are incredibly good at linking cause and effect—sometimes too good. Ten thousand years ago most cause and effect was pretty clear. And our brains evolved to deal with that. But it means that when you see something occur in a complex adaptive system, your mind is going to create a narrative to explain what happened—even though cause and effect are not comprehensible in that kind of system. Hindsight’s a beautiful thing." So much of what we deal with in our environments now are accurately classed as complex systems. As a Product Manager, I'm always looking to understand cause and effect - but it's just not that simple. We need to remind ourselves that our first impressions and instincts aren't always accurate, and to really uncover what's going on takes time and dedicated effort to discover. How are you dealing with the complexity in your world? https://lnkd.in/eHhDGMkR https://lnkd.in/exhPbHqz

Every question you ask about the situation before you, can be replaced with a better question, leading to a more revealing answer. So give it an extra thought -- improve your question. I use it very successfully with my innovation-science clients; when you ask a better question you innovate better. Works for conflict resolution and for general problem solving too.
The Most Difficult Thing to Do in Every Situation is to Ask the Right Question
