Today kicks off U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week! This year's theme is "Fighting Antimicrobial Resistance Takes All of Us." Antibiotics can save lives and are critical tools for treating common and serious infections, including those that can lead to sepsis. Any time antibiotics or antifungals are used, they can cause side effects and contribute to the development of antimicrobial resistance, one of the most urgent threats to the public's health. Being antibiotics aware helps patients, caregivers, families and healthcare professionals improve antibiotic prescribing and use. 📌 Today, on #EuropeanAntibioticAwarenessDay, we recognise the vital role of #antibiotics in treating and preventing the spread of infections. 🦠 This year, we support the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in spreading the message about reducing unnecessary antibiotic use, which contributes to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This is essential to keep our current antibiotics working effectively for those who need them. #AMR occurs when bacteria become resistant to antibiotics, making infections harder to treat. Don't forget that: 🔹 Antibiotics only work for bacterial infections, not for viral illnesses like colds or flu. 🔹 Antibiotics are not painkillers and will not help with headaches, aches or fevers. 🔹 Use antibiotics responsibly - only when prescribed by a healthcare professional, and always complete the full course to avoid treatment interruption or leftovers. 🔹 Dispose of unused antibiotics safely in accordance with national guidelines for responsible disposal.
