Google Search Ads become more visual every day as a result of platform improvements to meet brands’ needs. Google will add conversational experience over the coming months to the Google Ads platform, where users can chat with the platform and receive suggestions using generative AI and images for their campaigns. Conversational experience is powered by Gemini, Google’s largest and most capable AI model that can understand and combine different types of information including text, code, audio, image and video. Brands will be able to approve the assets before anything goes live. If the quality of this capability matches advertisers’ expectations, the function is going to be a great help to enhance the performance of campaigns, increasing engagement and efficiency. Over 300k Views. Yet only 1.3K upvotes. And worst of all, muted comments. Google Gemini’s latest ad ‘Dear Sydney’ launched during the Paris Olympics. And people aren’t happy. The ad depicts a dad writing a letter to his young daughters’ sporting hero. The fan mail is written using AI. Unsurprising, this is catching quite a bit of hate. In the ad, the dad says, "I'm pretty good with words but this has to be just right”, as Google Gemini writes up the letter. I think the reasons people are reacting so harshly are : • The idea of a machine trying to convey human emotion is basically what so many sci fi dystopian movies are based on. Why would you put this on the biggest stage in the world and expect a positive response? • It’s inauthentic to hear someone talk so lovingly about their daughter’s hero. Only to end with ‘get AI to write this hero a fan letter’. Honestly, who the hell wants to receive AI generated fan mail? And all this coming at a time when people are already tired of AI generated content. Currently, 50% of consumers are able to spot AI-generated copy. Around the same percentage said that they became less engaged when they saw AI generated content. The message from the market is clear: People do not want to outsource their ‘humanness’ to AI. Now, before I checked, I would have guessed that this ad was half written by AI. But guess what? I did check. It wasn’t done by AI. It was done in-house by Google. No ad agencies involved. So if there’s any upside to this whole thing it’s to know that ad agency creativity is not going anywhere just yet!
