I've been at Let's Go Zero for a couple of months now (more on that to follow!) working as a Climate Action Advisor helping schools on their sustainability journey.
When a school registers for Climate Action Advisor support, the first thing I do is toddle off to their website to have a little look and try to get an idea of some of the things they might already be doing when it comes to sustainability.
90% of the time I draw a blank. Even for schools who I know are doing LOADS of great stuff! And for the other 10% I've usually had to dig pretty hard and open several PDFs of archived newsletters.
So I LOVE this action from Green Schools Project for the #ClimateActionCountdown!
Pretty much every school I speak to will start the conversation apologising and saying 'oh, we're not really doing much'. And then during the course of the conversation, there's a steady drip, drip, drip of AMAZING stuff they're already doing and have done!
It's human nature to move on very quickly from the things we've done, and to focus on the 'to-do' list. But I'm a massive fan of the 'Ta-Da!' list - taking a little bit of time to brainstorm and write down all the stuff you've already done, and then blooming well celebrate it! 🥳
This can be a great way to engage other people as well - get the pupils creating mini-vlogs of the projects that have already happened/are in progress; ask staff what they've been doing in their classrooms; speak to the support staff about stuff that has been happening in the office and the school grounds.
Make a list. Celebrate. And thank the people (adults and children!) whose hard work has made it happen.
And THEN (this bit is super important!), shout about it!
Put it in your newsletter (in fact, create an eco-section for every newsletter!), make a 'sustainability' page on your school website that is easy to find, share on your school's social media - not only is this a great opportunity to share what you've done and to publicly thank those involved, but this is an important step in shifting social norms. If people come to your school website or socials and see loads of exciting projects that are engaging the children in learning, saving the school money, AND lowering emissions, it not only sparks ideas for things they might be able to do at home or in their own schools, but it helps to make taking climate action the norm.
What are you waiting for (I know, the end of term, the time, and the headspace...)? Get making, and sharing, your 'ta-da!' lists! (Please do share them below, big or small, I would love to see them!)
PS. This applies to all organisations, not just schools. And to individuals too. Share what you're doing, and the co-benefits you're seeing (eg financial savings) on your socials, and with your family and friends!
