Since a while the below is one of the best podcast interviews I have heard. Richard David Precht, a german philosopher, author and podcaster is discussing with Jürgen Schmidhuber the future of artificial intelligence and if that the world biggest thread or if it will turn into the world biggest opportunity. It is a deep talk in german and maybe my international follower will find a way using AI to listen to it in their preferred language. Strongly recommended and well done to Mr. Precht and Mr. Schmidhuber https://lnkd.in/e-CrZzZi

🎙 New "IR in the Age of AI" Podcast Episode: AI and Military Technologies 🛡 In this latest episode, Medlir Mema Ph.D. sits down with Raluca Csernatoni, PhD and Marijn Hoijtink to discuss the escalating 'innovation race' among corporate giants. They discuss Al's contribution to the rise in power of the private tech sector vs. the state, as well as the 'existential threat' and 'superintelligence' narratives around foundational Al models and how these shape specific socio-technical imaginaries of the future. They also dive into Al's impact on geopolitical and military power, including Sino-American competition, and the rise of #Al 'nationalism' or 'sovereignty'. 🤖 If you want to learn more about these topics you can join Medlir, Raluca, Marijn and other leading scholars and experts in Brussels this summer for our AI and Global Governance Programme: https://lnkd.in/eZbEUGyk https://lnkd.in/dZscWeBT

Bill Gates' podcast w/ Sam Altman came out yesterday, as part of his "Unconfuse Me with Bill Gates" series. I listened this morning. Fascinating to hear two marquee tech leaders talk frankly about their thoughts on what our AI-driven future holds. Particularly striking was a discussion about how AI should be regulated. SamA is in favor of a top-down international agency a la the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for governing the largest and most advanced AI models. That would be a start, but he recognizes that no amount of top-down regulation will prevent bad actors from using models for nefarious purposes. A combination of top-down regulation and bottom-up education around #responsibleAI, #AIethics, and #AIgovernance is what I think will give us the best chance of preventing the worst outcomes of this exciting new tech era. What do you think? Let me know. Link to podcast in the first comment.

Great conversation with Yuval Noah Harari and Aza Raskin on AI. A recurring theme in the discussion is the speed of AI progress. From the episode description: Historian Yuval Noah Harari says that we are at a critical turning point. One in which AI’s ability to generate cultural artifacts threatens humanity’s role as the shapers of history. History will still go on, but will it be the story of people or, as he calls them, ‘alien AI agents’? In this conversation with Aza Raskin, Harari discusses the historical struggles that emerge from new technology, humanity’s AI mistakes so far, and the immediate steps lawmakers can take right now to steer us towards a non-dystopian future.

The regulatory environment around AI is starting to take shape - and we're starting to see movement on which safeguards may be in place in the near future. This week, Hard Fork (The New York Times podcast) shared a helpful overview on how California is exploring legislative options to balance safety and innovation - and what it means for the rest of the U.S. I recommend a listen if you're interested in learning more: https://t.ly/QeGm5 Keith Enright, Dominique Shelton Leipzig, Anne Chow (She/Her), Walter Sun, Ph.
