Running a startup in Germany is like competing in a triathlon—with Kafka-esque bureaucracy as an extra leg. Here’s one of my recent experiences: In 2021, I had a tax loss carried forward, but my health insurance refuses to accept it due to a law from the 90s designed to ensure that doctors who bought cheap property in the ex-GDR kept paying their dues. After 2 months of phone calls (and even getting fined for delays caused by this circus), I was told I need a reissued 2021 tax certificate explicitly stating that my loss was from business ventures. I called the Finanzamt, only to be bounced around because my file was moved after I changed addresses. When I finally reached someone, they explained the statement I need might not even be possible, as my file originated in a different section. Exhausted, I put it aside for the day to focus on real work. The next day, I received another absurd letter from my health insurance (pictured below). 💡 5-10 hours a week of nonsense like this is my reality. Until our company can afford a full-time assistant, I’m stuck tackling it myself. ❓ Is it any wonder why Germany struggles to produce leading startups or attract international founders? Navigating this bureaucratic maze feels like an impossible barrier to innovation. To those in similar battles: you’re not alone. To those with the power to change this: let’s talk about making Germany more founder-friendly. #StartupLife #GermanBureaucracy #KafkaMoment #Entrepreneurship

Classic! This year FA wrote a letter to me that my company that had 0 profits this year had to pay taxes. Why? Because they "calculated" that taxes were due. Of course, the company will get the money back the next year when we filed returns, but where to get the money to pay taxes now? Two days later they froze the company's assets and bank accounts to "recover" the money. Good luck doing business without a bank account, thank you very much!

Dear Hannah, I feel your pain since we are experiencing similar instances every single day. Unfortunately "Unternehmertum fördern" is just an empty phrase since the real focus in this county is on dependent employment not entrepreneurship

So sad - but could a Musk-like non-ministry help us in such a situation? 🫠

Let alone "E-Bilanz" which creates similar, long struggles in doing tax declaration by yourself... however, to be fair, I enjoyed indeed very helpful and supportive calls with my financial authorities... They tried to help where they could. I think it is the laws and the wealthy society, generating these many extra laws just to try to serve everybody equally. This is "just" an error in our system, but still everybody believes in equality of everybody. Maybe we should rethink this believe and emphasize more on the global society facts that you can only achieve and sustain this extremely high level of equality of every (single!) individuum in our society (Germany), when you can afford it! We have no money coming from oil or similar, we solely depend on what we produce and sell in competitive markets. So stripping down bureaucracy in my eyes begins in reducing laws but ultimately requires will of the people which is not possible in an over-wealthy society... 🤷 so just try to focus on your personal output creating worthy things that somebody will pay for. And pay taxes 😁, which is "enough" of contribution to the society?

Fully understandable! But why wait for a full-time assistant? Why not hire someone part time or remote? Is there something holding you back from outsourcing part time right now?

This is exactly what slows us down in Germany: we have to deal with bureaucracy instead of focusing on creating value.

TK has a great App since years. You get everything quick and easy, sometimes the same day, no paperwork. The tax problem is real. It is so complicated, slow and sometimes full of mistakes. Time and money consuming to pay your taxes 💸
