Excited to share that I've just completed the Introduction to Responsible Data Management course organized by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission- NDPC. This journey has been incredibly insightful, and I’m excited about the new perspectives and skills I’ve gained. In an era where data is the backbone of decision-making, understanding how to handle it responsibly is crucial. This course has deepened my knowledge of ethical data practices, focusing on how to collect, manage, and protect data with integrity. It's not just about compliance—it's about respecting the privacy and rights of individuals whose data we handle every day. One of the key takeaways for me is the importance of data minimization and transparency. Learning how to navigate these aspects effectively will undoubtedly influence how I approach data in my current and future projects. I'm now more equipped to contribute to creating data strategies that are not only efficient but also ethical and inclusive. I want to thank everyone who supported me throughout this learning process. I’m excited to announce that I’ve successfully completed the Responsible Data Management course, offered by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission- NDPC in collaboration with data.org. This achievement strengthens my ability to manage sensitive data responsibly and ensures full compliance with global data protection regulations, including the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR), Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA), and established Data Governance Principles. As a software and data engineer, I frequently handle Sensitive Personal Identifiable Information (SPII) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This course has equipped me with essential skills to: 1. Conduct comprehensive Risk, Threat, and Benefits Assessments (RTBA) before undertaking any project. 2. Ensure that the applications I develop comply with various governing laws across regions, including the EU GDPR, NDPA, and the data rights of individuals as dictated by their local, sectional, or regional regulations. 3. Implement best practices for data privacy, security, and ethical data usage, thereby ensuring robust protection for end-users and stakeholders. Be protective! How much of your data is out there in the public space? Do you wonder most times when there is a random call, text, email, tags on social media and lots more, and you ask, "how did they even get my contact?" that question should make you curious enough to begin to question what and why your data is collected. sometime this year, I did a short course on Responsible Data Management, a course organized by the Nigeria Data Protection and Regulations Commission in collaboration with Data.org, It indeed opened my eyes and consciousness about my personal data. I have successfully completed the second part of the course: Managing Change; Implementing Responsible Data Management. guys did I learn anything new? O yes! Since I entered the data ecosystem, I am interested in anything data.. I got more insights about the fact that there are risks and threats associated with data released out. Be deliberate about what data you give out, organizations also must have responsible Data governance policies to save them the risk of law suits and threats to the lives of its clients. The more I delve into the world of tech, tech governance and compliance, the more convinced I am that accountants can no longer be in the dark when it comes to technology. I believe strongly that accountants must prioritize data privacy compliance due to the sensitive nature of the data they handle and the potential consequences of non-compliance with data protection laws. Especially for auditors - The information they have access to, such as financial records and personal details, requires strict protection to maintain confidentiality and prevent unauthorized access. As the global village moves more towards data protection, failure to comply with data protection regulations can result in severe penalties, including hefty fines and damage to the reputation of both the accountant and the organization they work for. Therefore, accountants must remain vigilant and ensure they adhere to all relevant data privacy laws and regulations to safeguard sensitive information and maintain trust with their clients. COMPLIANCE ALERT: All persons who are data collectors, data processors, and data controllers and are registered under the Uganda Data Protection and Privacy Regulations 2021 are required to submit an Annual Data Protection and Privacy Compliance Report to the Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO) within 90 days after the end of every financial year. The financial year referred to herein is defined under s.3 of the Public Finance Management Act Cap 171 as a period of 12 months that commences on 1st July and ends on 30th June of the following year. Therefore the Annual Data Protection and Privacy Compliance Report is required to be submitted between 1st July to 30th September of every financial year. The Data Protection and Privacy Act Cap 97 regulates the collection, storage, processing and use of personal data by various entities which include government agencies, corporations and private institutions operating both within and outside Uganda. ________________________ Reg.50 The Data Protection and Privacy Regulations, 2021
