Having worked for a number of retailers the ambition of introducing immersive experiences into the retail space isn’t a new one. Be it the beauty bars of John Lewis, the wine tasting of Waitrose or the ability to build your own minifigures in LEGO stores. But I wonder if one upcoming collaboration offers a new perspective into how to truly inspire customers with experiences. With Nintendo and Universal Studios Hollywood both providing best in class expertise in experience lead engagement, the opening of the new Donkey Kong Country in Universal Studios Japan provides a fantastic example of how to lead with experience and immersion while introducing retail elements that add value to customers. Rather than starting with a retail basis, users enter a curated world in the park which delight their senses. From new ride experiences, to the ability to see their favourite characters, complimented with a nostalgic soundtrack. Within this world clever and exclusive shopping and eating moments are introduced. Rather than feeling like an opportunity for a sale, these look like they are being presented as opportunity to enhance your immersion into the world of Donkey Kong. Then layer on intuitive uses of digital and physical activities and attention to detail in the world building, and this is looking to be something truly special. At one point, I happened to think about an application potentially interesting for immersive entertainment and it could well fall under the "small with $" (as opposed to "big with $$$") category in terms of different directions in this industry. If you picture a flexible display, e.g. roughly of a wristband size or something easy to wear and be seen, that can glow with different colors. How about adding on some data input function (e.g. favorite franchises, characters, etc. via a mobile app) and a proximity communication gig and maybe also a micro vibration motor, so that guests in a relatively closed environment (think beyond just an indoor attraction, say a theme park instead) could easily find peers with same qualities within certain distance. It could also be a great feature for events like nighttime spectaculars where these devices could glow (just as the glowing Mickey Mouse hats) and even with certain character-based tricks so that guests may feel more emotionaly connected. Wouldn't that be much cooler than the magic bands? LoL.

Could entertainment companies offer more to local communities through CRE? Netflix has released their plans for their first permanent destination. Located in Philadelphia, this 120K sqft commercial footprint will house amusement rooms, a theater, dining options and a marketplace. It’s the first of several more to come from the entertainment giant. But could others follow the same path? Would Hulu or AppleTV join the move and create a commercial footprint outside traditional entertainment hubs? And of course, with the burgeoning VR technology in mind, could this develop into the future of amusement parks? High-quality amusement offerings that could enter multiple markets with lower barriers to entry is certainly worth conceptualizing.
