8 of my students chose to reflect on AI feedback for extra credit (in addition to peer review and a required tutor visit) through http://MyEssayFeedback.ai. The main reactions? *Surprise at how accurate, specific, and useful the feedback was. *Desire to use AI for feedback again. Other observations: Most asked for feedback on clarity or organization rather than for encouragement. A couple reported being unnerved at how fast the AI feedback showed up. One had an "aha" moment. Another said they now had many more ideas for what to add to the essay. One was glad to find that the AI made the same suggestion as the tutor. I'm a volunteer advisor on this teacher-created app, and I'm feeling like we're on the right track with our approach! Grateful to Eric Kean for developing MyEssayFeedback and to all the teachers who have tested it and helped shape it, including Marc Watkins Liza Long, Ed.D. Aimee Firmani, and Cathleen Peters. It's been great to get ed tech advice from the likes of Jeremy Dean, PhD, Nate Angell, and Debbie Abilock. And we appreciated the initial free access to GPT-4 that OpenAI granted. I'm so proud that MyEssayFeedback.ai has advanced to the next phase of consideration in the Tools Competition (for ed tech)! I've been a volunteer advisor on this not-for-profit app aimed at building student confidence and skepticism of AI and framing AI feedback as secondary and supplementary to human feedback. Educator Eric Kean created it, and it's a labor of love for all involved. Many other educators have advised on it with varying levels of involvement, including Liza Long, Ed.D., Marc Watkins, and Chris Basgier. The model is to let faculty share and adapt their writing feedback prompts. There are plans to build in an option for students to create their own feedback types too. 3 Crucial Lessons I’ve Learned the Hard Way Here are some business lessons that have been particularly challenging for me to incorporate, even though I know them to be true. 1️⃣ With People, Slow Is Fast Especially in a world where we reach for AI assistants daily, we have an expectation that other people will conform to our schedule. I sent you an email? Why didn't you respond right away!? We have urgent deadlines on our side (finding a new client, getting a new booking...) and we hope that our urgency will translate into another's response. But in my experience, every time you try to rush the process with another human being, you end up getting nowhere. The fastest way to get what you want is to take it slow. 2️⃣ In a Jam? Get on the Phone In Dutch they have a catchy saying for this "beller is sneller" (calling is faster). We're on Slack and Teams ALL day, and we type type type. Sometimes we can type our way into a disagreement. If you've ever found yourself getting angry as you type, you can see how these types of interactions quickly devolve. I'm very guilty of this in the past. When you sense a tiny bit of confusion or friction—STOP TYPING. Pick up the phone and call the person. 99% of the time you'll clear it up in minutes and end with both of you laughing and happy. 3️⃣ Bet on Yourself It's a simple mantra that carries profound implications. Trusting in your own abilities, especially in moments of doubt, can lead to personal and professional breakthroughs. Negative situations and people can make us doubt ourselves. But I've been shocked at how powerful the words "Believe in yourself" have felt to me, painted on the wall of my gym. If you're not going to be your own #1 fan, who will? How can AI support students’ writing processes without taking the place of writing or thinking? We invite you to consider an app developed by teachers, MyEssayFeedback.ai. As the Founder of MyEssayFeedback.ai, it’s been an exciting journey since launching the platform back in September. I’ve had a chance to meet many curious, forward-thinking teachers and have had the chance to explore a new technology with them. In addition, I’ve been rewarded by the positive experiences that students have had, interacting with an AI system in a positive and responsible manner.   Here are a few, shared with permission:   "By only editing previously written content instead of generating new content, MEF eliminates the fears of plagiarism that usually accompany the use of AI systems, while also promoting the benefits of targeted essay feedback." -Andrew   "I think there was a nice balance when MEF gave students help because it was not just giving answers, it was providing help that engages and provokes stronger writing." -Grace "MEF did not rewrite anything for me, so while it gave suggestions on things to improve and how to do so, the work was still mine. MEF taught me how to use A.I. in a way that doesn't allow me to cheat or have something else do my homework for me, yet it truly improved my writing." -Michael     Unlike other feedback apps, MyEssayFeedback allows teachers to choose, adapt, or write instructions for exactly what kind of feedback the system should give on a student draft. With the open library of feedback prompts, teachers can build on what others have done and adapt prompts to their own philosophy and assignment specifics.   MyEssayFeedback allows students to use AI with guardrails and instructor guidance. Students can ask teachers’ opinions on the AI feedback, and teachers can weigh in anytime we see something we don’t agree with. We can assign reflections or revision plans in response to the feedback and automatically give students credit for their engagement.   MyEssayFeedback is simple for teachers and students to use and syncs easily to common LMSes.   Thanks to a grant of $25,000 Azure credits from Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub, new instructors will be able to test out MyEssayFeedback.ai for free through at least Fall 2024 (limit 3 teachers per school).   We are already FERPA compliant and have verified accessibility. Future essay analysis will leverage Microsoft's GPT4 model, backed by a stringent privacy policy.   In addition, by showing students an appropriate way that AI can support the writing process, we hope to discourage overreliance and academic dishonesty.   Thanks for reading all this!
