E-fuels pioneer HIF Global has announced its first project in Brazil, which would produce up to 800,000 tonnes per year of e-methanol derived from green hydrogen. This would require about 160,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen a year made from around 1.6GW of electrolysers, as well as 1.12 million tonnes of captured CO2. The US-headquartered company, which opened the world’s first e-fuels plant in Chile in 2022, has signed a land reservation contract with the Port of Açu, the largest deepwater port-industry complex in Latin America, where it will build the project. The privately owned port in the state of Rio de Janeiro has already obtained a preliminary environment licence for the development of a hydrogen and derivatives hub. Prumo Logística, the company responsible for the strategic development of the Port of Açu, has already signed a land reservation contract with Norwegian developer Fuella to build a green ammonia plant with 520MW of electrolysers at the port complex. These developments demonstrate that governments around the world are backing hydrogen as the fuel of the future. Chevron New Energies, a Chevron U.S.A. Inc. division and the Angola Government have created an MoU, which was recently signed in Luanda, during an event hosted by Cabinda Gulf Oil Company Limited (CABGOC), Chevron’s subsidiary in Angola. This MoU concerns the companies agreement to research lower carbon opportunities. These lower carbon opportunities include projects related to nature-based and technological carbon offsets, lower-carbon intensity biofuels, as well as products such as hydrogen, carbon capture and storage. This news brings me joy for three reasons: BP was the first company where I spent enough time to truly learn. Although it wasn’t my first job, it was the one that contributed the most to my growth as an engineer and allowed me to kick-start my professional career back in 2010. Iberdrola is where I am now, through CREADIS, and it’s given me the opportunity to learn and grow in the world of renewable energy, a field I specialized in but never had the chance to work in before. And, in addition, all of this is happening in Castellón, my hometown and current residence. Although we aren’t known for R&D due to our strong focus on the ceramic industry, it’s exciting to see the city now positioning itself in a key sector for the future. Is the green hydrogen segment becoming a lucrative investment opportunity for traditional Energy and petroleum companies or is this a hedging strategy ? SLB has invested heavily in John Cockerill's electrolyzer business, the success of which is heavily reliant on quick uptake of hydrogen in different demand segments. John Cockerill and its subsidiary John Cockerill Hydrogen have announced a €230M ($246M) capital increase, led by SLB (NYSE: SLB) and supported by SFPIM, Wallonie Entreprendre, and international family offices. The funding, expected to close by June 2024, will support John Cockerill Hydrogen's strategy to expand its global presence with gigafactories in the USA, India, and the UAE. SLB’s investment will form a strategic partnership to advance the production of next-generation pressurized alkaline electrolyzers. This initiative, along with a joint venture with Technip Energies, aims to enhance John Cockerill's leadership in green hydrogen technology, crucial for decarbonizing various industrial sectors.
