Happy New Year to those who've just blown the doors off their Year End! 💪 New Year, refreshed plans. Part of those plans for us in Real Estate is to recruit the best of breed commercial real estate lawyers. 🙌 I know you've heard many say this....(he yawns... 😩) but we're different. Let me explain some recent anecdotes from my experience in my team: 1. "We unclip wings": terrible cliche 🤢 aside, I mean, I want to see people develop - I mean, really develop. Support their own career plans, back them and really support them. 🚀 With one example in mind, I saw someone who truly hated public speaking (like, really hated it) being videoed for the release of 'The Napthens Real Estate...' you'll have to wait - I'm not stealing their thunder.🗣 The same person has taken control of some departmental functions to make things smoother and more efficient - whilst excelling in their own performance but more importantly client care and has coached others! (I've shared feedback on here before in terms of how we capture that...) ⭐ 2. Next up - "let people make a positive impact and to some extent LJFDI 😜": this person became a Napthenite in the last couple of years. After seeing the light, that person starts, totally gets the team, our client's needs, 'us', our 100% commitment to a particular part of the world we operate in, that person is a 'Leisure' sector go-to lawyer 😎 and is commercially astute - as well as smart-working. We need to recruit now as a consequence. 🙄 👌 3. "Can I run this by you?💡": idea thought up ✔, concept stress-tested ✔, soft launched ✔, toe-dipped ✔, hard launched ✔- bang 🔥. And now? We have over 400 new clients using that niche service. This lawyer has progressed their partnership career, made their positive mark whilst bringing the rest of their team with them! 🤩 4. "Let me show you what I want to do for us..." - they say. I say, 'show me', they explain it = huge green light 🚦 given. What's happening now? An assessment of making repetitive tasks, using tech sensibly (😵 note), adopting buy-in from the whole team ✔ and consulting those who are directly helping that person deliver their plan 🔥 = a plan actioned which will make our teammate's lives easier = giving better client service. 🤘 5. Lastly - here's an example of true and simple teamwork: someone is off/out/on holiday - whatever: what happens? 🏃♂️ 🏃♀️ I don't have to ask for help because those around them do it automatically. No 'that's my client'/'they're my fees'/'leave it until I'm back'/an unhelpful Out Of Office on, saying absolutely nothing to help progress the matter, irritating our clients. 😱 🔫 Why? Because we are a caring bunch that genuinely wants to help each other out. Whilst we are located in all 6 of our offices now, we act more and more like we're under one roof. It’s B Corp Month! 🎉 With this being the first for Avery & Brown | B Corp™, the entire team came together over the past couple of weeks to put our heads together and create a strategy to get everyone involved in the celebrations. For my first task during #BCorpMonth, Tilly and I were tasked with completing B Lab UK’s ‘Behind the B’ training course for some personal development. This course is useful for anyone looking to learn a bit more about the B Corp movement and what it has set out to achieve. PPI 85: Career & Community Spirit (Stop the fighting) My name is Andrew MacPherson. I was born in Kent, in #Tonbridge. I'm #retired now, having worked all my life in various places. I've worked in London in the BBC, and I've worked in the provinces, Southampton, Glasgow, Birmingham, etc. I retired at an early age on health grounds. because the #stress of the second job that I had with the Kent County Council was too much and it was getting me down. I was on tablets and the doctor, she advised me to take time to retire if I could. And I did. I was lucky enough to have reached the age where I could retire. And so I took early retirement, which they arranged for me. So, what does living a good life mean to you?  Well, this is a very good life, out in the sunshine. Isn't it? Yes, with the dog, out with Alfie, and a nice blue sky, and with you. Living a good life is, I don't like a hectic life. Having worked in #London for a long time, I'd had enough of that. I was quite glad to leave that. But then I worked for Kent County Council in traffic management and traffic signals, which built up and up and up as I became more able. And that became so stressful, as I said before. So I had to chuck that in. Although I was gratified to know that they wanted me back in a consultancy capacity. But I turned that down for the same reason. Because if I went back again, I would be back to square one. So I've been retired for 20 odd years now and here I am, living my life of retirement with my wife, Christine, and enjoying whatever we can do with Christine who has limited physical abilities, which don't really affect me. fortunately, but it does mean that we have to tailor our activities to suit our situation. So what about an intentional activity? Which one would you say has had the greatest impact on your life?  My career, undoubtedly, which I enjoyed a lot. It was a bit of a pain travelling, getting into London and television centre and other places. But apart from that I enjoyed that very much. It was a very interesting career, very interesting life and you're seeing all sorts of people, stars and producers and sound engineers, which was my speciality. And I thought I was doing a great job then and I was enjoying the job. The same thing happened second time around in my second career with the County Council and I got into the design and everything to do with traffic signals from a letter say from a member of the public who was moaning about something and if I if we looked at it and decided that it was a suitable case for doing something about it then we'd do tests, traffic count tests, timing tests and all sorts of things and then then it would be in my lap to design the right kind of traffic signal junction, do the design plan and set out the layout for the road men took to install it in the signal company (Cont in comments). Respect of Profit When we win a project, the team asks, “what is the budget to deliver the project?” When the budget is optimal, I see the team members’ eyes lighting up. Working under constraints is the reality of the world. When you promise a high-quality delivery, a promise of providing a platform than a mere product, you would like to be judged fairly. This is not easy unless we facilitate it. It requires constant discussion on the value proposition, why that value proposition is important for the client, and when you deliver, you get the clients write testimonials for your success. This facilitates making an optimal profit, which you need to survive and grow.
