Gunner is so thrilled to have been able to give back to our community through our Gunner Cares initiative this past Veterans Day. Douglas Jackson, a National Guardsman since 2006, has been named Gunner's "Under One Roof" winner, landing him and his family a free roof over their heads! We're happy to have been able to take a heavy burden off their shoulders. Read more about the contest and the Jackson family's story in the link below. #giveaway #roof #roofing #gunner #veterans #thankyou

https://lnkd.in/eG_nuwTr #ArmedForcesFriday This is kind of early for Memorial Day, which is a month out, but it's a topic I like to visit before we all make plans. 159 years ago on April 26th, 1865 the largest surrender of Confederate troops during the US Civil war took place when General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered his forces to General William Tecumseh Sherman. Like many conflicts, the US Civil war ended not with a single victory or surrender, but a number of them. General Robert E. Lee surrendered earlier at Appomattox to General Grant, which is often seen as the "end of the war" though it took a few months to truly conclude. One of the more colorful and successful Confederate leaders, Colonel John S. Mosby, never surrendered his forces, instead he disbanded it and sent his Soldiers home to surrender individually, with Mosby himself surrendering in June. Johnston's surrender negotiations began on April 17th, shortly after the assassination of US President Lincoln, and it would take until the 26th to conclude (under threat of reopening hostilities). There were a few more battles after this event, as well as the eventual capture of Jefferson Davis in May. I studied a few of these battles during my time at the Maneuver Captain Career Course and visited one of them. This was slightly haunting, as they seemed to be a series of one-upmanship in destruction. We have the memoirs of the leaders who often knew each other personally. Some of them graduated the US Military Academy, others served together in the US Army in the antebellum period. But that's just one of the tragedies of this conflict. In the end we get to look back on history as an example, both for small events as well as large ones. Most of the time we get to step back and evaluate them from a distance, without ties. I had several ancestors who fought for the Union during this conflict, one survived the infamous Andersonville prison. Sometimes learning about your history and visiting these places frames them differently, no longer passages in a textbook but standing in fields long after the guns fell silent and Soldiers went home. It's worth the time to travel and reflect, especially since most of these places are open for visitors and preserved as historic landmarks. Something to consider for this upcoming #MemorialDay.

Marines are simply different. They have a bond, a camaraderie that's untouchable. In many businesses, none compare to Veteran Service Brands. It's like walking into a room and instantly feeling like part of a family. For those who swap a Marine uniform for a business suit, the change is immediate. It's no longer about protecting fellow Marines; it's about creating successful veteran business owners. “#CopCity-ATL is designed to join Michigan #CampGrayling founded in 1913 when local lumber baron, Rasmus Hanson, donated over 13,000 acres to the State of #Michigan for military training. Camp Grayling has since grown to 147,000 acres that spans over three counties of maneuver area, state-of-the-art ranges and modern support facilities, making it the largest National Guard Training Center in the Country. In fact, there are Forty-Seven other States that have the same or similar plans…So why are so many of these being built all over and around the country? Why on such a large scale and why with such a wide array of training dealing with urban warfare and repression? “ https://lnkd.in/ghpqFGBc
