There is a wealth of talent when it comes to #internalcomms - so many examples of campaigns, storytelling, channels, teams, individuals, and more. It's so important to recognise that talent, and that's why I am thrilled to be back to be a judge for this year’s IoIC National Awards (now in their 69th year!). 38 classes across 6 categories - something that everyone can enter, no matter what sector you're in, or if you're the lone communicator or in a team. ...AND unique to the IoIC, all entrants receive a written critique which highlights what the judges really appreciated and suggestions of what might be done to help develop in the future. While focused on academic events, it's nonetheless applicable to far more than students and visitors. On April 5, 2024 I will be at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna, British Columbia, to take part in a conversation with Azim Shariff on "Has Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Lost Its Way?" This is a type of conversation organized and supported by the Heterodox Academy, a unique academic event that pairs two scholarly experts who disagree on a topic in a public discussion of that topic. To find solutions to global challenges, we must embrace diverse viewpoints. The 1979 report to The Club of Rome, "No Limits to Learning," has already recognised the need for broad participation in societal learning and involving everyone in decisions that impact their lives. True participation enables people to explore and question the "black boxes" of knowledge, assess their relevance, and reshape them when necessary. Drawing on these principles, The Fifth Element initiative by The Club of Rome, Soka Gakkai, and The World Environment Education Congress have embarked on a project to promote transformational learning to stir humanity toward better futures. More about the project inspired by "No Limits to Learning," and “Before it’s too Late,” a dialogue between Club of Rome co-founder Aurelio Peccei and Soka Gakkai president Daisaku Ikeda is coming soon. Looking for a weekend read.....Arts, Culture and Development – The Tricky Balancing Act. This thought piece has been commissioned by the British Council to explore the links between UK arts and international development from a practitioner’s point of view. Recognising that there is an ongoing shift in both these sectors – from more traditional ways of presenting artistic practice or delivering development, to a more participatory and inclusive way of working – the British Council is currently exploring where the connections and synergies lie, and how we can make a contribution through a cultural relations approach to development. This paper sets out the changing landscape in the arts and development sectors and presents ways in which large-scale organisations can find new ways of working to shift the balance towards a more flexible, mutual and sustainable model. It complements a Culture and Development literature review that has been completed by JP Singh for the British Council.
