Every single year the quality checkers at the iconic VBC mill in Biella run their hands over enough fabric to stretch from Milan to Beijing. And back. Four times.
In this 70-metre warehouse (completely automated, cherry-picked by unmanned machinery) thousands of rolls of the most beautiful cut-length cloths in the world sit, ready to be dispatched to the most celebrated tailors and brands in the world.
This isn’t a Silicon Valley or Chinese tech start up. It’s an ancient textiles mill that has been operating since 1663, stewarded by 13 generations of family, sitting in a rural town and carved into the mountains.
Those brand and product descriptors marketers love so much—craftsmanship, artisan, tradition and history—don’t have to mean that all the work is done by hand or the old-fashioned way. The key to scale, accuracy and consistency is, more often than not, in the technology that powers the business.
It’s a great reminder that even the oldest businesses need to innovate, stay current and push boundaries. VBC are proof that you can do it, while still remaining true to your brand and history.
