What a week for EPR for textiles around the world!
➡ On Monday, EU governments adopted their position on the roll-out of mandatory and harmonised Extended Producer Responsibility schemes for textiles.
➡ On Tuesday, Australian Minister for the Environment Tanya Plibersek announced the start of operations for Seamless. Seamless, Australia’s clothing product stewardship scheme (an approach closely related to EPR), becomes operational on 1 July 2024, with the mission to build a circular economy for clothing in Australia by 2030.
➡ Today, the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNECLAC) published their long-awaited report "Reversing direction in the used clothing crisis". Among other things, the report examines the global trade in second-hand clothing, and the impacts of this trade on Chile. Policy recommendations include the need to amend trade policies, to achieve common definitions of waste, and to establish EPR policy.
