#Federal University of Technology Owerri #Chemical Engineering #Undergraduate plant design defense our design topic was to design a plant that would produce 100,000 metric tonnes of Acetic Anhydride from coal using the Monsanto process. As the group leader, it was really tasking, but with wisdom, synergy with my team mate, intense research, asking our senior colleagues and supervisors for directions we were able to succeed. This research really involved alot from the use of acetic Anhydride to the process description of the Monsanto process, down to the material and energy balance, the process flows, piping and instrumentation diagrams, qualitative flow diagrams, equipment sizing, specifications and material selection, safety, economic analysis, plant layout and site selection and finally starting and shutting down the plant. indeed it was a big one. I am really thankful for this opportunity, not only have I gained in-depth knowledge in my field of study but I have learnt leadership skills in the process. Indeed you really do not know the potentials in you until you set your mind to accomplish something. Thank you chemical Engineering Futo. #ChemicalEngineering Exciting News Alert! We are thrilled to announce that our Year 3 Chemical Engineering students have successfully defended their groundbreaking project on cement manufacturing! Under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Mai Hassan and Eng. Nourhan Sherif. Not only did they showcase their expertise in the field, but they also innovated by creating a machete for the process, pushing the boundaries of traditional methods. Cement is a finely ground, non-metallic, inorganic powder when mixed with water forms paste that sets and hardens. Cement is a basic material for building and civil engineering construction. Output from the cement industry is directly related to the state of the construction business in general and therefore tracks the overall economic situation closely. After mining, grinding and homogenization of raw materials; the first step in cement manufacture is the decomposition of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) at about 900 °C to leave calcium oxide (CaO, lime) and liberate gaseous carbon dioxide (CO2); this process is known as calcination. This is followed by the clinkering process in which the calcium oxide reacts at high temperature (typically 1400-1500°C) with silica, alumina, and ferrous oxide to form the silicates, aluminates, and ferrites of calcium which comprise the clinker. The clinker is then ground or milled together with gypsum and other additives to produce cement. Their dedication, hard work, and innovative spirit are truly commendable. I am excited to share that I presented my chemical engineering senior project on the corrosion of Duplex Stainless Steel 2205 in a simulated formation water environment. Leaking accidents in pipelines due to material degradation in corrosive formation water negatively impact process quality, safety, and production in oil extraction. This study explores the corrosion resistance of 2205 stainless steel by examining the influence of sensitization temperature and time. Electrochemical tests were conducted on samples heat-treated at various temperatures and durations, alongside mill-annealed samples. The results demonstrate that mill-annealed samples exhibit superior corrosion resistance compared to improperly heat-treated ones. Surface morphology analysis reveals relics of sigma and austenitic phases, indicating improper heat treatment. The study's findings have practical significance for oil production companies, offering potential cost reductions through enhanced corrosion resistance and reliability. The study was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Husny Zubair and Dr. Abdulla Alshatar, along with the valuable contributions of my colleagues Malak Almeel and Sara Rasheed Rashed.
