🚨 Global estimates suggest that more than half of the world’s children aged 2-17 experienced physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse during the past year, and that 1 in 4 children under the age of 5 live with a mother who has experienced intimate partner violence. We know that violence against children and violence against women are intimately connected in many ways - yet we don't know enough about what interventions can help prevent both of these forms of violence. Inspite of the fact that most programs and strategies working to end VAC and VAW have mostly developed separately, recent reviews and analyses have identified various intersections between VAC and VAW including: co-occurrence, shared risk factors, similar underlying social norms, common consequences, intergenerational effects, and the period of adolescence as unique period of heightened vulnerabilities to both types of violence. Accordingly, addressing the intersections between VAC & VAW is considered essential for a more effective prevention and response interventions.

Despite the known intersections between violence against women and violence against children, these two fields typically work in silos. These issues often occur at the same time, and share risk factors. That's why I'm so excited to see this collaborative exercise in creating joint research priorities. It's not surprising that some of the top questions relate to defining the core elements that would make integrated programming effective, adapting existing best practices in each field to address other forms of violence, and improving collaboration and coordination through better use of evidence, a common language, and methods. Now let's get to work to answer these important questions!

This post by UNICEF has a close reference to what our team has been engrossed in Kano State in the last few days under the EU-UNICEF EYE Project as Master Trainers for the SBMCs. UNICEF as well as other International Donor Partners need to expand this research outcomes and also intensity wide sensitization and mentoring programs for mitigating SRGBV to address the root causes of the problems to reduce the huge number of OOSC, reduce barriers to accessing Education, and other rights based privileges. Parents and Community stakeholders including Education MDAs (Govts) and NGOs need to have an analysis of the research contents, and to integrate it in their programs, restrategise to tackle the huge menace confronting us all. A report released this year by UNICEF, World Health Organization, Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) highlights the intersections between violence against children and violence against women. It echoes what we have heard from our partners based on their experiences on the ground. We believe that by addressing violence at an early age, the cycle of intergenerational violence can be broken. Reflections from Te Tāmata Tipu - Toah-Nnest Sexual Violence Conference 2024: What a great two days at the largest sexual violence conference in Aotearoa's history, hosted in Ōtautahi Christchurch. I was honoured to stand alongside Louise Nicholas and Ken Clearwater (especially for this photo 🤣), gaining and sharing insights as our sector works towards lasting change for survivors and their whānau. My key takeaways: 💡 Survivor-centric change: True progress comes from listening to all survivors (men, boys, women and girls, rainbow and takatāpui, and tangata whaikaha, disabled people). Then empowering their voices, and having trauma-informed, grounded approaches that give survivors the power to choose their support. 💡 Collaborating for impact: Strengthening partnerships across sectors, and streamlining service delivery across sexual violence and family violence is essential to breaking down silos and delivering integrated, effective support. It’s what Te Aorerekura sets out at a strategy level - efficient at the delivery end too! 💡 Prevention & healing: It’s clear the sector needs more emphasis on prevention, rangatahi leadership, and healing pathways for survivors, their whānau, and communities. While LNT’s role in the sector is survivor and whānau support, and bringing survivor perspectives into our training and advocacy work, we contribute to reduction and we support organisations working in prevention. The material was tough, some more than others, but inspiring - reminding us that every action counts. And for individual survivors, every action counts a whole lot!! To those in the sector: let’s build on the learning and relationships, push for systemic change, and continue to stand together in this mahi. On Wednesday, Micaela Cronin tabled the First Domestic, Family, and Sexual Violence Commission Yearly Report, marking a significant milestone in the 10-year National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children. This report underscores the urgent need to support resource-strapped services and engage men in all aspects of ending violence, including efforts to redefine masculinity. The sobering statistics shared by Micaela in her National Press Club address highlight the gravity of the situation: a shocking 11% increase in sexual violence in just the past year, with First Nations women 33 times more likely to be hospitalized and six times more likely to die. Alarmingly, 60% of LGBTQI+ individuals will experience family, domestic, or intimate partner violence in their lifetimes. Additionally, the Australian Institute of Criminology reports a 28% increase in women killed by intimate partners over the last two years. Why is this important? These issues are not just critical in the broader community but are particularly pressing within the veteran community, where trauma, stress, and the impacts of service can exacerbate the risk of violence. We need to get better at talking to our men and listening to them. Men must be part of every aspect of ending violence, and this requires leadership from both men and women. Trauma-informed intervention options, better information sharing, and improved risk assessment and management are essential. Finally, prioritising data collection is crucial. We need accurate data to understand where services are needed, measure their effectiveness, and ensure we are truly making progress in ending gender-based violence. This is about ensuring safety, not just for women and children in the broader community but also for those within our veteran community who have given so much to our country. The majority of sexual assault against women is perpetrated by someone known to them, usually their male intimate partner. Much of this violence goes un-recognised and unreported. For sexual assault awareness month, I want to highlight my ARC funded research on intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV), based on in-depth interviews with victim/survivors (most available open access). This work highlights the profound harms of IPSV and its complexity. I'll be posting one paper a day from Mon-Fri this week. Paper 1/5 "Toward an ecological understanding of intimate partner sexual violence" (https://lnkd.in/g698V_rv). Explores contextual factors relating to IPSV and shows similarities/differences with IPV and sexual violence by non-partners.

Prof S. Caroline Taylor AM PhD and Sophie Otiende have co-authored the #CouncilOfEurope 'Guidelines for policymakers on engaging with victims and survivors of childhood sexual violence'. These guidelines provide essential principles for policymakers, guiding them on how to engage meaningfully and safely with victims and survivors. The aim? To create holistic, evidence-based policies that effectively protect children, facilitate healing, and ensure justice. Developed by survivor advocates, the guidelines underscore the urgent need for genuine and strategic engagement with survivor advocates to combat child sexual violence and exploitation. "Nothing About Us Without Us" - Engaging with individuals who have experienced sexual exploitation and abuse during childhood is critical. These guidelines are designed to ensure an evidence-informed approach to legal and policy reforms, offering victims and survivors a platform to advocate for change. These guidelines provide a framework to support policymakers in engaging victims and survivors in various initiatives, including legislation, policies, healing initiatives, community education, and more.
