I mean, insane!!! I completely understand you are hiring a resource, but asking them for a whole day wordcount as a sample test is completely unjustified... Bro, a good evaluator can analyze a writer by reading the first 100 words of any of their copy.. that's it! Even 500 words are okay, but above them.. can't just imagine... But let’s not forget the crown jewel—the classic, all-encompassing, simply labeled Content Writer. It’s almost as if companies believe that every field requires a different species of writer, each bred in a niche-specific lab. Need a writer who can spin runway trends into words? Sorry, your five years of writing brilliant tech blogs just won’t cut it. But wait—what’s this? At the core of every job description, despite the endless adjectives, is just that: a Content Writer. Here's the twist: content writing is a craft, not a collection of isolated skills. The best content writers aren’t defined by their niche—they’re defined by their ability to adapt, research, and deliver quality content, no matter the topic. Yet, somehow, we’re all expected to have tunnel vision, sticking to one field as if words lose their magic when applied elsewhere. It’s amusing, really, how the same companies that want a “specialized” writer also need someone versatile enough to write about anything and everything under the sun. The most common denominator? Just being a great Content Writer. It’s almost like the skillset is universal—who would’ve thought? So, here’s a little note for hiring managers: Instead of splitting hairs over which flavor of content writer you want, how about recognizing the real talent lies in those who can craft stories, no matter the subject? I know a company that is looking for a talented proposal writer/tech writer. Full time, W2. They need someone who speaks the language of health IT systems, Agile development, and US Federal Government procurement. You don't have to be able to build health IT systems, but you do need enough of a background to know what matters when writing about it in a proposal.   On the proposal side, they value talent more than experience. On the tech writer side, they need attention to detail and the ability to pull relevant details out of subject matter experts. Familiarity with NIH is a plus. An understanding of what it takes to win in writing is key. Technical accuracy is important, but it's not enough.   Being on the Maryland side of the beltway is a plus, but they might go for someone remote who's got the talent.   They have mature processes and take them seriously, so I'm sure HR has a real position description that needs to be fulfilled. You'll have to talk to them to get those details. I don't even know how much they are paying.   What I do know is that this company is my favorite to work with in the whole world. Given the number of companies I've worked with and my published recommendations about proposal development, that says a lot. I will be advising them through the hiring process. Recruiters and Hiring Managers need to understand this: Whenever there’s a job posting for a content writer, it often feels like you're looking for a one-person department rather than just a writer. ➡️ You want every possible type of content created—blogs, social media posts, ads, emails, web copy, and articles. ➡️ You require an entire brand strategy to be developed and content scheduled accordingly. ➡️ You expect someone to manage the team schedule and track everything effectively. ➡️ SEO needs to be flawless with instant results. And you're offering only $300-$500 a month for all this. That’s absolutely ridiculous! Writers are professionals, not machines. They need time, fair pay, and reasonable expectations to deliver quality work. If you want excellent content that drives results, it requires proper investment; not just in terms of money but also in understanding the value of the work. Respect the profession, respect the talent, and compensate accordingly.

Here’s the truth: Content writing is a craft. It’s not a catch-all for every task that doesn’t fit neatly elsewhere. It requires focus, creativity, and time. Asking one person to juggle 15 different hats doesn’t create efficiency—it creates burnout. If you want great content, hire someone to write content.
