Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia CEO Michael Kilgariff spoke at today’s Victorian Transport Infrastructure Conference. He highlighted that every Australian needs 8 tonnes of stone, sand, gravel, and cement annually to support essential infrastructure like transport, energy, water, housing, defence, and social projects. Consider this: a new home uses 100 tonnes of aggregates and 50m³ of concrete. High-rise buildings require 1,000 tonnes of aggregate per floor, and highways like North East Link need 14,000 tonnes of aggregate per km. Yet, the industry faces growing demand and shrinking accessible supply. Efficient logistics are crucial, with transport costs comprising 25% of final material prices. Proximity to projects can significantly cut these costs. Michael Kilgariff also discussed the red tape barriers to new supply. The Infrastructure Australia 2023 Infrastructure Market Capacity Report highlights that long approval times for quarries (5-10 years) leads to shortages, forcing materials to travel longer distances. IA identified the Victorian Quarry Approvals Coordinator as a model for other states. Significant new RMI report by Satyam Maharaj and Anish Tilak on reducing #embodiedcarbon in roadways: "In recent years, state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) across the United States have made progress to reduce the embodied carbon impact of concrete construction by deploying high-performance concrete mixes that reduce the most emissions-intensive component of concrete — ordinary portland cement (OPC). Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), such as slag and fly ash, as well as portland limestone cement (PLC or Type 1L), have all been used successfully by state DOTs. Even with the wide availability of these materials, however, state DOTs face constraints in maximizing their use due to overly prescriptive criteria in their concrete material specifications. Revising these specifications offers a pathway for DOTs to improve their concrete mixes and reduce carbon emissions. By optimizing specifications to lower cement use and increase SCM use, DOTs have the potential to slash their carbon emissions by an impressive 32%." https://lnkd.in/gMPwn6-T
