🌟 Apprentice Tip of the Week: Set Clear Goals 🌟
We're excited to share our latest tip for apprentices on their journey to success. This week, we're focusing on the importance of setting clear goals.
🔹 Why Set Clear Goals? Clear goals give direction and purpose. They help you outline your short-term and long-term objectives, keeping you motivated and focused.
in my experience it's absolutely critical for the industry to make it easy for **anyone** to get into PR. Myriad entry routes are essential for maintaining diverse thinking, (I came from running record shops until it was suggested that being hungover and arguing about Neil Young all day "isn't a proper job" (copyright: my mum, c. 2003)).
If we bring in too many PR-trained or PR-educated people - especially at entry level - we risk simply consolidating the same ways of thinking, writing, and cultural references from the ground up. This is terrible for creativity and lateral thinking.
This isn't to say that degrees, internships, or apprenticeships aren't crucial - they are, but only as part of the bigger picture and far wider talent pool. In order to avoid stagnation we need to keep being an open, intriguing, and enticing industry to work in, wherever and however you land in it. No-one should ever think "I can't get into PR because I've not trained for it".
Undergrad, postgrad, apprenticeship, internship... what's the best route into PR?
This week's PRWeek UK Beyond the Noise podcast features PRWeek 30 Under 30 members Samantha Ndebele of Burson and Lucy Somers of PLMR who discuss their different experiences of entering the industry and talk about what comms training may look like in the years ahead.
Have a listen (link in comments). Thanks to Samantha, Lucy and Evie Barrett
As we navigate the ever-evolving job market, one thing remains clear: internships are a vital stepping stone for young professionals. At ALJ Egypt, we recognize the significance of nurturing young talent through structured internship programs. Our initiatives are not just about filling roles; they are designed to empower future leaders by providing them with hands-on experience, mentorship, and a deeper understanding of their chosen fields.

Hi Sunshines! Happy Summer Solstice to those of you in the northern hemisphere. May you be well and thriving. ☀️
Happen to know a marketing rockstar (2-4 years of experience) seeking to soar in a purpose-driven, growing organization? If so, spread the word and/or send them my way! Here’s the link: bit.ly/3XvTDZB.
I'm working with Franklin Apprenticeships, an amazing company truly committed to smashing goals while making the world of work a better, more equitable place. Franklin helps forward-thinking organizations develop a strategic talent pipeline and skilled workforce with innovative programs like technical apprenticeships. All while also developing potential and creating career opportunities for people who might not have considered a technical career because they lack a degree.
It's good work, great people, and a wonderful place to grow a marketing career. Thanks in advance.

“Traditional university degrees are still seen as the gold standard by employers and society compared to apprenticeships.”
I heard this recently.
But it’s simply false.
And I’ll tell you why ↓
Employers value experience over traditional university degrees.
As Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, said:
↳ "I value skills and experience much more than just having a degree from a prestigious university."
Which makes sense.
Because learning theory alone just isn't enough.
And is why the apprenticeship model of learning is now sought after.
Where you gain professional experience at a company.
↳ Whilst studying towards industry-specific qualifications.
With the largest companies like Deloitte, JP Morgan and Barclays offering degree apprenticeships.
But here's the problem ↓
There's still a lack of awareness around these opportunities.
Which is why students choose to attend university, by default.
So lets inform students, teachers, and parents about apprenticeships.
↳ As it's becoming a desired alternative to university, rather than the lesser option. 💎
💭 Is there still a stigma around doing an apprenticeship?
56 students, 28 apprentices, and three hands-on projects = a day filled with learning and fun for the next generation!
We’re thrilled to support and mentor these bright minds, helping shape the future of the industry. Our Future Day event is always a highlight, providing valuable experiences and real-world skills.
Check out the video to hear directly from the students about what they learned and from our colleagues on the importance of taking part in such initiatives.
Skills-Based, Early-Career Strategy #2
Professional Apprenticeships
Professional apprenticeships, which have been common practice in other parts of the globe, are making headway here in the United States. These programs are different from internships, which are usually defined as short-term work experiences that put existing skills to use to gain experience. An apprenticeship is an extended initiative to teach skills that will help both the employee and the organization in the long term. Several major organizations, such as Accenture, Airbnb and Google, now offer apprenticeships to help their employees advance.

High school can be a tough journey, and for many students, one of the biggest challenges is feeling prepared for life after graduation. In fact, nearly 75% of high schoolers don’t feel fully ready for college or their careers.
This article really resonated with me because it highlights a crucial gap we need to address as educators. We must provide students with opportunities to explore their interests, discover their passions, and connect their learning to real-world experiences.
In today’s fast-paced world, preparing students for success beyond high school has never been more critical – Destinations Career Academy of Wisconsin is at the forefront of this innovative approach. 👩🎓👩⚕️👷♀️
Destinations Career Academy of Wisconsin exemplifies how career-oriented learning can excite students about education and provide them with the skills and experiences they need to thrive. By offering diverse pathways like internships, apprenticeships, and specialized training, empowers students' to pursue their passions confidently.

"We shouldn't have to do that"
Recently I was talking to someone in the industry and that was their sentiment surrounding extended & enhanced onboarding for new summer interns.
We had just discussed how our Workforce Development team gets a full week to get our new summer interns (current college students studying something construction or engineering related) and how appreciative we are that our Execs & Operations Team fully support this investment.
Should we HAVE to do this? To me that is irrelevant - we have data and anecdotal evidence showing that we NEED to do this.
Our commitment to "Investing In People" compels us to take the time necessary to set these young folks (most of whom are new to the industry) up for success & for "Winning In The Field"
Reminds us of the quote from Henry Ford: "The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay."
It's good for the interns, Sargent, our industry, and our region(s). And it's a really fun week for Kevin Gordon & me! 😃

When employees see that their organisation is invested in their continuous professional development, they are more likely to stay with them for the long term. Apprenticeships create a sense of loyalty and commitment among employees, fostering a positive workplace culture.
