"Conscious incompetence sucks!" Each mediation workshop brings its own memorable quotes. The above encapsulated the rigour of the learning for the participants in this round. Like so many of our alumni, participants wondered at the start how difficult mediating could be (ie. unconscious incompetence). The live demo by the expert Lih Jeng Low made it look deceptively easy. Over 3 days of simulations, they quickly discovered that concurrently collaborative problem-solving, maintaining neutrality, managing emotions, and building rapport across cultures was really not as straightforward as it had looked (ie. welcome to conscious incompetence). The good part is that everyone finished the course with that humble confidence that we can reduce conflict - but doing it well will require personal effort to keep practising and learning.
