There has been quite a lot of chatter about the impact of Trump's tariffs both on the US, but also other countries. We have published two blogs on this today. First see our CITP blog which simulates the possible impact of the tariffs for the UK, and disaggretes this by sector. A sobering read. https://lnkd.in/eVxkTfPj I strongly suspect these tariff will not be implemented - or at least not without some attempt at negotiation and making them targetted. For a broader discussion which picks up on this and also considers how the UK could / might respond, see our guest blog from David Henig, published by the UKTPO: https://lnkd.in/e5b2f9Qv

Duty Drawback: A Hidden Gem in International Trade In today's complex trade landscape, savvy importers and exporters are leveraging duty drawback to reclaim millions in tariffs and taxes. Here are key insights from recent industry discussion with Anthony Nogueras of Alliance Drawback Services: 🔄 HTS-level substitution is revolutionizing drawback claims, allowing for broader matching of imports and exports. 🌐 Companies are strategically altering supply chains to maximize drawback recovery, especially with the 25% China tariffs in play. 🍾 The alcohol industry has emerged as a major beneficiary of recent regulatory changes, opening up new opportunities for excise tax recovery. 💹 Proper value matching is crucial - many companies are leaving money on the table by not optimizing their drawback claims. 🔍 Even if you have an existing drawback program, a reassessment could uncover significant additional savings. ⚖️ Pending legislation could further liberalize drawback rules, potentially unlocking hundreds of millions in additional refunds. 💼 Remember, duty drawback isn't just for large corporations. 🎙️ Correcting Ramaswamy & Kirk on Tariffs: Why Free Trade Benefits All 🎧 In episode #61 of the InFi podcast, I tackled an exchange between Vivek Ramaswamy and Charlie Kirk on tariffs and free trade, a conversation brimming with misconceptions about economic principles. The topic? Should the U.S. embrace protective tariffs for economic and national security? My response brought the Austrian perspective front and center. Here are key takeaways: 1️⃣ Free Trade: A One-Sided Advantage: The economic case for free trade doesn’t hinge on reciprocity. Just as a basketball coach wouldn’t abandon smart plays because the opposing team makes mistakes, it makes no sense to impose tariffs simply because another country does. Raising tariffs makes Americans poorer by forcing higher prices on goods—essentially a tax on our own citizens. 2️⃣ National Security and Procurement: Concerns about relying on foreign supply chains, especially for critical items like semiconductors, are valid. But instead of blanket tariffs, solutions exist in targeted military procurement policies or strategic reserves. Free markets are adept at addressing these needs without the inefficiency of broad protectionism. 3️⃣ Comparative Advantage Isn’t Just Theory: Many argue tariffs protect jobs, but this ignores how markets channel resources to industries where we’re most efficient. If we specialize and trade, everyone—producers and consumers—ends up wealthier. The same logic that applies to states within the U.S. applies globally. 4️⃣ The Fallacy of “Leveling the Playing Field”: The idea that we need to match foreign tariffs with our own misunderstands trade. Tariffs aren’t a favor to other nations—they're taxes that hurt us. I debunked the premise that free trade is only beneficial if mirrored by trade partners. 📌 Listen to the full breakdown where I challenge not just the economic arguments but the rhetorical traps often set in these debates. Together, let’s demystify free trade and its profound benefits.
