The Artefact Ai Film festival celebrates short films created using generative AI tools, offering a platform for both seasoned directors and emerging talents to showcase their innovative work. Particular interesting is the gallery of finalists with a 167 of great shortfilms, all made with AI-Tools. They are all round about 5 min. and as far as I am concerned, there are some commonalities : 1) Most pieces try to stay away from a hyper realistic approach, and feature a distinct look and feel away from reality. 2) Obvious but yet surprising: All of the finalist have a strong idea about the story they want to tell and "just" used AI as a tool for storytelling. 3) Despite all the tech used, I still found it quite striking what enormous impact the craft in audio, direction and editing has on the final piece. None of which can yet be automated or outsourced to AI. I liked "Dark, Ligt, Yellow" as well as "GENERATION" a lot. Whats your favorite?

Human creativity 1 AI 0 🤖🎬🚫 This week witnessed a victory for creatives in the heart of London. The Prince Charles Cinema, a linchpin in the indie film scene, took a bold stand. In response to a public outcry, it cancelled the debut of 'The Last Screenwriter', a film scripted by AI, set for June 23. This raised crucial questions about AI's role in the arts. What does this shift mean for creativity? It's a dialogue about technology complementing art, not supplanting it. The message is clear: creators may face challenges, but they're not obsolete. This is so disrespectful to all real animators, CGI artists and real film makers. A bunch of random moving images with no story, plot or characters behind them. This is nothing close to film making, so please people, don't pretend that spending hours behind a keyboard creating prompts is. Film making is art. Art is about self expression. None of this is self expression. Just random computer generated images that have zero meaning.

You're watching the beginning of a new global storytelling industry in 2024. In Glendale Arizona, AIfilm3 took the leap, creatively and financially, to showcase AI films, from around the world over three days. Of the selected film, mine was included called Empowered. Empowered sees a young Black child dream about breaking glass ceiling after glass ceiling. It took about 10 days, and in effect cost about £15 (software costs) minus the cost of me the creative. As a business think of the markup. Empowered as a production could easily have been made for between five to six figures. Now imagine its 2034, not just Arizona, but several more AI art and film festivals are now present. Amongst them will be the pre-eminent festivals. Perhaps AIfilm3 from its early branding. By then the films would have become better, more diverse, down to AI software, and they'd be a paying audience readily wanting to access themed films made by users. It will spawn more eclectic narratives, wider scopes of stories, and untold narratives that previously could not get funding. Imagine that post here on linkedin realised as an Ai-film. It will impact both television and the cinema industry, just as YouTube has impacted television watching by a generation If you remember where YouTube was in 2006, then this is what's happening now. The future is already here

Gary Hustwit and I just launched a new thing: Anamorph. It’s a software and film company where we’ll be exploring ways to bring generative technology into the process of making and experiencing movies (in a filmmaker-focused and ethical way). After creating a 168-hour-long film at the Venice Biennale, and the software platform behind the sold-out world premiere of “Eno” at the Sundance Film Festival, we’ve started a laboratory/consultancy to continue innovating with generative software and AI as a way to enhance human creativity, not replace it. We’re currently crafting new tools and partnering with creators, studios, exhibition spaces, and streaming platforms to re-imagine the cinematic experience on-screen and off. Anamorph will also be powering the live screenings of “Eno” this spring and summer, making unique versions of the film on-stage in real time. We’ve got a few hardware projects in the works too... Looking forward to collaborating on a range of projects from video art installations to blockbuster feature films, and showing you lots of new things this year!
