Is using Dribbble and Behance for design inspiration actually helping or hurting our work as designers? Lately, I’ve been wondering if constantly looking at these platforms is the best way to approach design. Sure, the designs are beautiful, but something about it feels off. The more I dig into what design really means, the more I question if I’m just copying aesthetics rather than solving real problems. One line that really stood out to me recently was: “If you're only focusing on how something looks, you're decorating, not designing.” This hit home because design, at its core, is about problem-solving, not just making things look good. Decoration is fine, but is it enough? Are we just solving “other people’s problems” when we mimic designs from these platforms? I often see designers (myself included) pulling “inspiration” without knowing the why behind those design choices—colors, typography, layouts. We see the final product but miss the underlying decisions that make it work (or not work) for a unique context. So here’s where I’m at: Is it better to steer clear of visual inspiration from Dribbble and Behance, or can they still be useful in some way? Should design be approached without these outside influences to truly solve problems? What do you think? Does Dribbble actually help you become a better designer, or does it blur the line between decoration and true problem-solving? I’d love to hear your experiences and thoughts! Let's discuss in the comments..

Your design stands out because it seamlessly combines creativity and functionality. The thoughtful use of colors, typography, and layout creates a visually appealing experience that resonates with the audience. Each element is purposefully chosen to communicate the brand's message effectively, ensuring that the design is not only attractive but also meaningful. The balance between simplicity and detail makes the design versatile, working well across various platforms and mediums. Its modern aesthetic is complemented by a timeless quality, making it relevant now and in the future. Whether it’s a logo, a website, or a marketing material, the design’s clarity and professionalism inspire confidence and trust in the brand. Additionally, the design is user-centric, crafted with the end-user in mind. It’s easy to navigate, understand, and engage with, which enhances the overall user experience. The attention to detail and the harmony of the design elements make it not just visually pleasing but also memorable. Ultimately, someone would like your design because it’s more than just good-looking—it’s purposeful, functional, and leaves a lasting impression.

I have been using this design inspiration trick, on my Mac, for more than 15 years now. When I first started at Media.Monks, Matiás Jansen told me about this trick that he used to get inspiration throughout the day. However, you have to put in some time to make it work. Here’s how: - Start with a folder on your desktop and name it “inspiration” (or any name you find suitable for a design inspiration folder). - Fill it with design images you find on Pinterest, Behance, Dribbble, Savee.it, or better from the websites of your favorite designers, agencies or design studio’s. - Use that inspiration folder on your desktop to set the images as your wallpaper. - Go to Settings > Wallpaper > Add Folder or Album. - I like to tile the images so they fill the whole screen and set Shuffle to every 5 minutes and check Randomly. Be very selective on what you copy and paste in that folder. Over time you will find the designs that really resonate with you and you will build your own type of style of images you like and save to that folder. After a while you will use this folder as you go-to-inspiration-destination when, for instance, you start a new project. That’s it! Have a great weekend and stay inspired…

"Good design is obvious. Great design is transparent." – Joe Sparano The quote suggests that good design stands out and catches your attention because it looks well-crafted or organized. However, great design goes beyond just looking good, it’s so intuitive and effortless that you don’t even notice it. It’s about creating an experience where the user or viewer is completely absorbed in the content or the message, without being distracted by the design itself. For example, think of a website with smooth navigation, clear typography, and pleasing colors. With good design, you might admire these elements. But with great design, you barely notice the design because it’s perfectly supporting what you’re there to do, whether that’s reading an article, making a purchase, or interacting with a brand. As a designer, this idea means creating visuals that feel natural and unobtrusive, letting the user experience the content without thinking about the design choices behind it. . . . #graphicdesigner #logodesigner #branding #gooddesign #greatdesign #brandidentity #joesparano #quoteoftheday #creativehead
