Colorado football two-way star Travis Hunter signs #NIL deal with United Airlines. —— Hunter will be featured in advertising and social media spots for United throughout the year, along with promotion from his own social media accounts. Promotions will also focus on United’s new flight routes between popular college towns. The airline also previously partnered with USC quarterback Caleb Williams for an NIL partnership. —— Three things: 1. Massive brand —> big NIL partnerships Currently, Hunter has over 3.3M followers across Instagram, TikTok, Twitter/X, and YouTube. Along with being a creative content creator, he posts regularly and keeps fans updated on his life on and off the field. Because of this, he’s landed deals with brands such as CELSIUS Holdings, Inc., JLab, and Rock 'Em Socks. 2. More travel companies leveraging college athletes Great to see a travel brand such as United partnering with college athletes to expand their messaging to this demographic. I’m surprised more travel-related brands don’t do more NIL deals. Considering the amount of travel athletes do for their respective teams, it makes sense for companies specializing in luggage, travel bags, accessories, etc. to work with college athletes. 3. Use of school logos Unlike most NIL deals that don’t allow school marks, United paid for the use of University of Colorado logos in their advertising. (They also did the same with Caleb Williams last year.) So awesome to see the increasing popularity of the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) with attendance and TV ratings going through the roof. But this post is not about that, well sort of... When I saw the infographic below showing the growth in ticket sales to the Indiana Fever home games this year, it struck me just how awesome a job their entire recruiting team has done to react to such a massive change in talent capacity needs. We often talk about recruiting and workforce planning needing to be nimble, but rarely does change transpire this rapidly. Imagine what this HR team just did. Caitlin was drafted on April 15th, and her first home game was on May 9th. Historically, the Fever were used to getting about 4k fans per game, and now they had to prepare for the unknown. From ticket sales to concessions, facilities, security, and everything in between; they just knew they were about to grow like crazy and would need to find more talent capacity to do so. From the outside looking in, it appears as though they killed it. Through 5 games, they have seen more fans than they saw all year in 2023 averaging over 16k per game and the execution has been flawless. Shoutout to Donna Wilkinson, Angela Lee, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, CPSP, Lauren McMullen, and Jose Reynoso from Pacers Sports & Entertainment for pulling this off and teaching all of us a lesson in adaptive recruiting. Congratulations to Wrexham AFC on securing back-to-back promotions. They're certainly not the first club to achieve this feat but very few will have garnered such interest. There will be many pointing to their Hollywood ownership and the argument that money talks. Of course it does, but there are countless examples of people who have been successful in other walks of life, bought clubs and lost a pile of money. What marks Wrexham's ownership out is the fact that they had a plan when they bought the club, they've thought laterally and have executed it brilliantly. Yes, profile helps, but there are further examples of celebrities who've bought into sports clubs and have done nothing to drive either the bottom line or on pitch performance. It's estimated that the Club's front of shirt partner United Airlines is paying 20-30x the League Two average. But they're not buying into sketchy media numbers from the odd game here and there and League Two highlights shows. They're buying into Disney+, the genius Ryan Reynolds (and Rob McIlhenny!) marketing machine, the Wrexham story and the increased interest levels beyond the club's core support. I had the pleasure of going to a game there last year and it's clear they're building something special: not only all of the above but a football club right at the heart of the community. They've made an otherwise forgotten town feel proud again and created a civic focal point. They’ve put Wrexham on the map. There are stories now of American companies looking to invest in the region, succeeding where successive Governments have failed. Of course not every club can secure their own docuseries (and frankly I think we've had enough) but rather than trying to talk down their success, others should be looking at the story and asking what they can learn from it. What unique assets do they own that could be better leveraged, what story could they tell that is unique to them, how could they create a more progressive commercial model that capitalises on it? We tend towards insularity and the lack of time afforded to strategic or creative thinking in between the relentless match-to-match, season-to-season model means we don't tend to think laterally but here is a case study that should be causing us all to stop and think. Bravo Wrexham.

Being in-house for the past 3 years, after spending the previous 15 at external agencies, has been a masterclass in understanding actual business needs. I’ve gotten to see what’s most important to marketers, and how to do creative work that serves those goals first and foremost. Having learned all that I’ve learned at PepsiCo – seeing our PopCorners “Break Into Something Good” campaign recognized by the #Effie Awards as one of the most effective and transformational pieces of work of the year is a really special achievement. It’s proof that outstanding creativity that’s also been recognized by shows focused mainly on concept and craft (like Cannes, Clios, The One Show and ADC) can also have a very real impact on the success of a brand and the bottom line. The Dallas Mavericks just hosted (and won) Game 4 of the NBA finals 🏀 - Here's a breakdown of the construction of their arena 🚧 - In 1998, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Ross Perot Jr, wanted to replace their aging arena, Reunion Arena. Reunion Arena, which was opened on April 28th, 1980, was nice, but it was time to upgrade. It was the last NBA or NHL arena to be built without any luxury suites (and when the rich people can't enjoy an event, is it really an event worth attending?) They started really working on plans by 1999. On March 18th, 1999, American Airlines announced that they would acquire the naming rights for the arena for $195 million. By September 1st, 1999, they had broken ground. David M. Schwarz Architects were the main planners and they had a whole project on their hands. A 60 acre development, an entire team (INTERNATIONAL FACILITIES GROUP, L.L.C, HKS, Inc., Walter P Moore, Flack + Kurtz Consulting Engineers, & Austin General Contracting, Inc. and a few more) turned a railroad yard into a 840,000 sq ft arena. The total cost came out to $420 million ($723 million by 2023 dollars), which was about 30% over budget. But, originally slated for a 3-year project, they were done in under 2 and opened July 17th, 2001. Now, American Airlines Center, sometimes known as "The Hanger" or "The House that Dirk Built" can hold almost 20,000 people on any given night. With the Mavericks and the Stars calling this home, alongside many other concerts and tours, they can host over 200 events a year. So while Luka is fighting for his life to take down Jayson Tatum and the Celtics, you can know a little bit more about the place they play in.

It used to be that if you were a sportsperson, the more skill you had, the more money you made. Score goals, win titles, get paid. But that's changing, and if you're a career sportsperson, you need to realize it. World over, the biggest asset for a sportsperson is their brand and how they leverage it. Some do it on the field - there is a reason the world knows the name of the Kansas City Quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, even if they don't know the rules of the game. But for some, it happens off the field. The world also knows the name Travis Kelce without even knowing which position he plays because he's dating Taylor Swift. The biggest sports people earn more off the field than on it. Michael Jordan is the highest-paid basketball player in the world, even though he hasn't played a game in over 20 years. David Beckham mastered this craft by partnering with fashion brands. Colin Kaepernick was the face of Nike's football campaign in a year he wasn't even in the NFL. Sportspeople are essentially sports businesses - or, as Jay-Z says, "I'm not a businessman, I'm a business, man". Controversy and media scandals hurt their bottom lines. Their brands need management; the right deal makes a career, and the wrong one kills it. Over the years, I've worked with many entertainers on deals that impact their lives. Like every deal, it takes management: having the right contracts in place and protecting the IP that matters. It's fun and rewarding work, and it's great to see the game from that angle.
