Mabuhay from Manila 🇵🇭: It's great catching up with our IITTI World Civility Index Co-Founder Mr. . Patrick Ch in Vancouver, BC today! 😊 #SoftSkillsAreLifeSkills
What is IITTI World Civility Index?
IITTI helps companies in finding new employees with good soft skills (good people skills), using a standard measurement called 'World Civility Index'.
This Index is somewhat similar to credit rating, but instead of measuring how well a person can pay their bills, it measures a person's manners! Qualities like business etiquette, empathy, intercultural awareness.
The concept is that job-seekers can get the credential based on the World Civility Index, as proof, to show to employers EVERYWHERE!

It is very pathetic to see the kind of graduates our failing education systems are producing. There is a need to re-imagine our education system and the mindset of our graduates. Entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial mindset are rarely given the attention it deserves in our education system and public policy.
The business development and startup/entrepreneurial ecosystems are extremely undeveloped or missing altogether in most African countries. The video of the graduates below happens to come from Tanzania. Taking Tanzania as case in point, over 1,000,000 graduates enter the market each from post-secondary educations and only 250,000 graduates get absorbed in the labor market (REPOA, 2019) and it take about 5 years for a graduate to secure a job. These data are based 2015 statistic from National Bureau of Statistics which mean that the situation could even be worth 10 years later.
The alternative way of addressing the crisis is for higher education systems to play an active role in nagging the change of mindset among their graduates. Sokoine University through their business incubator program in collaboration with PASS as business development agency has played a critical in developing entrepreneurs and job creators.
The minister of agriculture Mr Hussein Bashe in collaboration with AfDB, Tanzania Agricultural Development and other financial institutions through the SAMIA Block Farming has allocated a agricultural land installed with state of art infrastructure for agribusiness production focusing on youth and young graduates. The country has doubled the budgetary allocation to agriculture sector last year. TADB has extended agriculture credit guarantee schemes to all the commercial banks locally to lift the credit constrains in agriculture sectors. I believe there a need to refocus our energy and talents into commercial agriculture.
There is a strong political will, excellent leadership, open market, and increasing financial support. The missing part of the puzzle is entrepreneurship training, business development services, appropriate mindset. In Uganda, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania, some youths are leaving their jobs to join agribusiness ventures. I believe if we introduce university-based business accelerators it could play a great role in unlocking the potential among our graduates.
University of New Brunswick in Canada did exactly that about 10 years ago and today they have supported more than 200 startups. University of Johannesburg through Center for Ecological Intelligence and Business School has launched similar initiative, and we are seeing your graduates moving into agribusiness in big waves.
In conclusion, I believe there is urgent need to have entrepreneurial training and mentorship across all universities to cover a change in mindset, new venture creation, and startup acceleration program. We also need startup financing program like Small Business Development Agency in USA.

"One could call it submitting to the offerings of chance, we think it is a ritual of opening oneself to receive."
"How one choses to engage with the environment is determined by how they relate to it."
"Indulging in those moments of pause to try and see what they(the other) did so easily, opened my mind to noticing what I ordinarily do not."
. . . And so many other gems in this feature which captures the essence of walking so succinctly. Check out this article to learn why the process of walking is so important to understand the complex interconnections between nature and society and the platform that Siddharth Agarwal has built to enable people to experience this process (also get a glimpse of the Luni Walk that me and 7 other fellows went on!) 🌸
