Thanks to those who came along to our watch party in Jersey yesterday. Don't worry if you missed it, here are some takeaways: 🏛️ Much of the discussion resonated strongly with the nuances of Jersey's political landscape, shedding light on the shared challenges and intricacies across different jurisdictions. 🔄 No business wanting to function smoothly would want 20% of its workforce to all start on the same day, and yet that is what happens with MPs after UK elections (and the percentage of new politicians is much higher in other jurisdictions). 🐛 MPs prefer their constituency work to Westminster work because in their constituency work, they are respected and can make a difference to the lives of their constituents; in Westminster they are 'earthworms' - expected the stay quiet and vote the right way. 💡 Special advisors shouldn't only provide a problem, but also the options for solving it. #CIPR #PoliticalInsights
Join us in Jersey to watch the Chartered Institute of Public Relations's online conversation with Greg Power OBE. Greg was a special adviser to both Robin Cook and Peter Hain, and has been involved in constitutional and democratic change since the mid-1990s. Since 2005, his organisation, Global Partners Governance Practice, has helped to strengthen political systems across Asia, the Middle East, North and Sub-Saharan Africa, and Central and Eastern Europe. His recently-published book, Inside the Political Mind | Hurst Publishers explores how social norms, public expectations and the personal interests of MPs influence the path of political development. We’ll be watching the interview together, and networking, at the Government of Jersey offices in St Helier. 🕛 Date: 26th March 🕛 Time: 12 – 1pm To secure your spot, email [email protected] or call 07797 744228.

Always funny to see the term "post-truth" used next to the oxymoron "discursive violence" without an air of irony. And in a rightful criticism of the politicization of this media moment, but without the self-awareness of the similar politicization of academia. You want to do something about it, repeal #tech indemnity so civil courts can do their job, and returning revenue to #NewsMedia outlets that can afford to function objectively, reinstate a #FairnessDoctrine if only by leveraging the threat of repealing media exemption under #FARA, and recentralize the distribution platforms of mass media which, yes, US Congress can do. This casual yet political transit of the word "violence" away from the material and rational to the politically motivated is almost as disappointing pop post-structuralism posing as intelligentsia as the false egalitarianism of European academics throwing around the word "colonial" as denigrating, with no self-awareness of its eurocentric use and understanding and thus reaffirming the very cultural egocentrism they think they're parsing. ["Speech is violence" is a] good illustration of how siloed, even extremified, academia has become. (Just because someone isn't as Left as you, doesn't mean they're "conservative". From the fringes everyone else looks the far opposite.) #NATO #Hollywood
🗣️📚 How can false or misleading political information undermine the knowledge and beliefs of certain communities? Dr Patrick Vernon co-published an article exploring how trans, Indigenous American, and Palestinian communities are affected by the eliminationist politics of Western modernity and how they are perpetuated through the hybrid media system. 📣 Recently published! Why do people say "no" to a peace agreement? Read this study by Dr. Juliana Tappe Ortiz and Julian Arevalo to learn how the design and content of Yes-and No-campaigns contribute to the outcomes of peace referendums. 🔗https://lnkd.in/d7vQ7_4P 🌎 Case studies: Northern Ireland and Colombia Key findings: 🔍 Scholarly attention needs to be refocused on campaign design and content rather than on voters' personal reasons. 🔍 No-campaigns benefit from a coherent campaign design and a unified message, allowing simple narratives. 🔍 Uncoordinated Yes-campaigns focusing on multiple advantages to the peace agreement struggle to convince voters. 🔍 Civil society support for Yes-campaigns can make it hard for even well-designed and unified No-campaigns.
