Each day of the week highlights different areas, and Wednesday is all about Expanding Youth Apprenticeship Opportunities for Underserved Populations, including persons with disabilities.
Here are a few Tips to ensure that Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs) are inclusive for all:
🔹 Review recruitment, screening, and enrollment policies that may pose as barriers to points of entry.
🔹 Provide accessibility accommodations.
🔹 Provide comprehensive training and support tailored to diverse needs.
🔹 Partner with agencies and community organizations for disability awareness education and recruitment strategies.
The Texas Workforce Commission is eager to support businesses interested in launching a Registered Apprenticeship. Our Vocational Rehabilitation Division Business Relations Team is also on hand to offer guidance on inclusive practices and provide support to apprentices with disabilities.
Let's leverage Youth Apprenticeship Week to highlight the benefits for apprentices and businesses, celebrating inclusivity and empowerment while providing companies access to a diverse talent pool.

We have been commissioned by the Education and Training Foundation to develop a proof of concept hub that supports and serves as a primary sourcing point for linking accessible apprenticeship opportunities and provision for parents, employers, support services, learners directly and training providers (both ITPs and colleges).
Transitioning from education to sustainable employment remains a significant challenge for many individuals who have learning disabilities, difficulties and/or autism. With the growing importance of inclusive growth and equal opportunity, bridging this gap is of paramount importance. The Department of Education's (DofE) recent maths and English and maths EHCP pilot see here and here, involving providers as part of this partnership, offers a promising direction to support individuals without an EHCP but who have been identified as having a disabilities, difficulties and/or autism.

People with disabilities provide an important talent source for closing the skills gap and should be included in apprenticeships for in-demand occupations. In the fall of 2021, a diverse group gathered in Collinsville, Illinois, to discuss an idea: to build a program that would place high school seniors with disabilities in Registered Apprenticeships.
