High visibility traffic enforcement combined with public outreach and education can reduce the dangerous driving behaviors that are all too commonplace on our roads. A new study from the Behavioral Traffic Safety Cooperative Research Program finds that “all of the HVE campaign studies showed positive impacts in the metrics evaluated.” This includes reductions in drunk driving crashes and deaths, increases in seat belt use, less cell phone use while driving and fewer pedestrian crashes. The report also provides four frameworks that agencies can use to evaluate and improve their campaigns. RACS strongly supports the New South Wales Government’s upcoming trial of average speed camera enforcement for all vehicles, as part of its ongoing commitment to improving road safety and reducing fatalities. The trial, which will begin in mid-2025, will cover two high-risk locations: the Pacific Highway between Kew and Port Macquarie, and the Hume Highway between Coolac and Gundagai. Both locations have historically recorded a concerning number of fatal and injury crashes. RACS President, Associate Professor Kerin Fielding, highlighted the importance of this trial in addressing a major contributor to road trauma. "Speed is one of the most significant factors in road accidents and fatalities. The introduction of average speed cameras has the potential to make a real difference in saving lives. We commend the government for taking this proactive approach, and we are fully behind this initiative," Associate Professor Fielding said. Did you know that EVERY intersection in Oregon is considered a crosswalk, even if there are no markings? Our Traffic Safety Unit recently held a pedestrian safety enforcement to help spread education and awareness around this issue. We sent out a news release ahead of time and put road signs up on the day of the enforcement to give drivers plenty of notice. We also put cones up to mark perception/reaction time given the posted speed limit, then we have a pedestrian cross the street who flags an officer if a driver doesn't stop. During our enforcement, we gave warnings to 43 people and issued tickets to 7 people. This is important education because pedestrian deaths in traffic crashes are on the rise. According to NHTSA, 7,388 pedestrians were killed in US traffic crashes in 2021 - the highest number since 1981. In Oregon alone, pedestrians accounted for 14.5% of all traffic crash deaths in 2021.
