It was a truly insightful session with Mr. Matnur Syuryadi and my university colleague, Arya Ferdinan Sultansyah At Briga Sustainability Center , our long-term success relies on continuous support from various stakeholders, moving forward at a deliberate and valuable pace. 🌟 As we conclude our summer internship program, we are proud of the contributions made by Mariann and Tia Marlen from NTNU. Their dedication and fresh perspectives have had a positive impact at OTS.   Mariann, with her background in Biomarine Innovation, and Tia, with her expertise in Economics and Administration, have demonstrated outstanding commitment and enthusiasm.   Here are some of the tasks they have contributed to: - Implementing the ISO 14001 management system - Improving the company's environmental policy and associated goals. - Developing a practical return scheme for OTS products. - Further pursuing sustainable recycling solutions for OTS products.   We asked Mariann and Tia to share their thoughts and experiences from their time at OTS:   Mariann: What was the most exciting project you worked on during your internship? "I must emphasize the effort put into setting up the return system for discarded products. This initiative has been very exciting and has highlighted the importance of industrial symbiosis in achieving circularity."   How has this experience influenced your career aspirations in the field of biomarine innovation? "This experience has expanded the range of companies I am considering for job applications after my studies. With my strong interest in marine biology and aquatic ecosystems, it has been fascinating to see how these can be integrated into various aspects at OTS."   Can you share a memorable moment or learning experience from your time here? "It’s hard to pick just one moment. After thoroughly reviewing OTS's procedures, I requested to join the production process for a day. It was very rewarding to see how the procedures I had worked on were applied in practice."   Tia: What insights did you gain about the maritime industry that you didn't expect? “I have to say the desire and need within the maritime industry to implement sustainable solutions. I also realized how crucial it is to make gradual, realistic changes – it's not always the big steps that leads to the best results, but rather the small, manageable improvements that make a difference over time.”   How do you think your work here will impact your future studies and career in economics and administration? “My work at OTS has given me an advantage when it comes to sustainable business practices. I’ve learned the importance of effective procedures and environmental focus. I can say I feel better prepared to handle the environmental challenges from an administrative perspective.   3. What advice would you give to future interns at OTS? “My best advice is to start early with your tasks, get to know the company and what they do. Konnichiwa! We’re excited to introduce Kokoro Nakamura, our new Business Intern from IPU New Zealand. With a strong passion for sustainability, she is ready to contribute to our mission here at Precycle NZ. 🌟 To help you get to know her better, let’s dive into a quick Q&A where Kokoro shares a bit about her studies, goals and her experiences with us over the last few weeks. 1️⃣ Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? My name is Kokoro Nakamura, and I’m from Japan. Currently, I’m pursuing a Bachelor of Contemporary International Studies at IPU New Zealand. In my free time, I enjoy staying active, particularly by going to the gym. It’s a regular part of my routine and helps me maintain both physical and mental well-being. 2️⃣ What do you aim to achieve from this three-month internship programme? I have two key objectives for this internship. First, on a personal level, I’m keen to develop essential transferable skills like intercultural communication, critical thinking, and coordination. By working closely with the Precycle Team and participating in various projects, I hope to enhance my employability after graduation. Secondly, I aspire to become a sustainability-focused professional. Precycle NZ is renowned for its innovative solutions in waste and recycling, making this an invaluable opportunity for me to gain insights that will support my future career goals. 3️⃣ Could you describe a task you found particularly interesting? Analyzing waste audit reports last week was an interesting experience for me. Before joining Precycle NZ, I didn’t even know what a waste audit means, so learning about the process was incredibly valuable. It has given me a much deeper understanding of how waste can be managed systematically and efficiently. 4️⃣ Have you learned anything about waste management that surprised you over the last few weeks? One of the most surprising things I’ve learned is about the different types of plastics - recyclable and non-recyclable. In Japan, except for certain regions, we don’t typically separate plastic waste when disposing of it. The practice of sorting plastics for recycling here at Precycle NZ has really opened my eyes to the potential impact of proper waste separation. 5️⃣ How do you feel about the team and work environment at Precycle NZ? Initially, I was a bit nervous, but everyone has been so kind and supportive that I quickly felt comfortable. Working outside of my academic environment and with people having different expertise has been refreshing. Their clear explanations of tasks have helped me transition smoothly into my role, and I’ve enjoyed applying what I’ve learned in my studies to real-world projects. We’re thrilled to support Kokoro on her exciting journey. We look forward to sharing her progress and the positive impact she’ll make with our Team! 🥳

🌿Delighted to announce that GREENROOFS® Innovated by ANCV, partner in the Green Roofs project, has concluded the green roof internships for Erasmus+ students in Portugal🌿 On 13 September 2024, the experience of 20 Erasmus+ students in Portugal who participated in the voluntary internships organised by the National Association of Green Roofs (ANCV) with the aim of developing and applying practical knowledge on nature-based solutions, in particular green roofs, came to an end. During the internship period, which ran from 29 July to 13 September, the students engaged in a number of enriching activities. The most significant were: City tour: Identification of streets that need trees to mitigate the urban heat island effect (CCV - Bragança, Lipor, CMIA - Fibran - Imperalum). Workshop preparation: Organisation of a free public workshop on green roofs (CCV - Bragança). Workshop for the technical staff of the host organisations (Lipor, CMIA - Fibran - Imperalum). Technical visits: Technical visits to companies and institutions hosting interns (Lipor, CMIA - Fibran - Imperalum). Project development: Development of projects for the implementation of green roofs on existing buildings (CCV - Bragança, Lipor, CMIA - Fibran - Imperalum). Matrix of indicators: Creation of a matrix of indicators to monitor and evaluate environmental solutions; (Lipor) Studies on thermal insulation solutions; (CMIA - Fibran - Imperalum) Final report: At the end of the placement, each student prepared an individual report describing their experiences, activities, challenges faced and what they enjoyed most about the placement. (Lipor, CMIA - Fibran - Imperalum) This internship was an enriching experience for both the students and the institutions involved, contributing to the training of qualified professionals in sustainable practices. The organisations that contributed to this training were the Centre for Environmental Monitoring and Interpretation of Vila do Conde (CMIA Vila do Conde), Centro Bragança Ciência Viva (CCVB), LIPOR - Association of Municipalities for Sustainable Waste Management of the Greater Port, Iberfibran - Extruded Polystyrene SA and Imperalum. This blog really made me think about the sustainability of this increasingly digital world we live in. Not something I’d thought about much before. Digital often seems efficient, waste-free, a better solution, but now I’m thinking about all the unused websites in the world, my embarrassingly full inbox, the 1000’s of digital photos I have. Oisin poses some good questions about how businesses (all of us) could measure their digital impact so if you have any knowledge or insights in this area, or know someone who does, I’m sure he’d love to hear from you. #data #carbon #digital #sustainability

The MScSM program has equipped me with in-depth knowledge of sustainable business practices, environmental management, and corporate sustainability strategies. This academic foundation, coupled with hands-on experiences from my internship, positions me to drive meaningful change within Loblaw. Firstly, I aim to leverage my enhanced understanding of sustainability metrics and frameworks learned in the MScSM program to improve reporting and data management practices at Loblaw. By implementing robust ESG reporting frameworks and consistently tracking key sustainability indicators will contribute to transparent and accurate reporting that demonstrates Loblaw's commitment to sustainability to stakeholders. Secondly, I plan to apply my project management skills honed during my internship to lead cross-functional sustainability initiatives within Loblaw. By fostering collaboration among different departments and stakeholders, I will advocate for sustainable procurement practices, optimize operational efficiencies to reduce environmental impact, and introduce innovative sustainability solutions. Lastly, drawing from my internship experiences, I recognize the importance of continuous improvement and ownership in sustainability initiatives.
