The day after an election can bring a whirlwind of emotions - some expected, some surprising, and all very real. It is a time of uncertainty in which your leadership is needed more than ever and also more impactful than you may realize. Election results touch on issues that affect us deeply - values, representation, economic forecasts, social policies, and the general sense of where we’re heading as a society. While you navigate your own reflections, your teams are looking to you for reassurance, wisdom, and direction. It is upon you as a leader to ensure that, no matter the differences in viewpoints, your teams collaborate well and unite in the pursuit of company goals. It can be challenging to guide your teams through their mix of reactions and concerns. Remember, it’s okay to pause and reflect. Your authenticity matters! At the end of the year, we tend to reflect on what occurred in the past 12 months and then begin to identify what we hope will occur in the coming year. Think of those summaries as "headlines." Why is that important? The "looking back" headline helps you recognize what has happened. Maybe you need to celebrate with your team. Possibly, you have come through great difficulties, and it is time to acknowledge the perseverance of many. Either way, the leader is uniquely positioned to create the headline and give context to the organization. The "look ahead" headline is aspirational. It is a forecast of what one hopes will happen. This is the time for the leader to inspire and prepare the company for future tasks. Interestingly, this perspective often identifies the transcendent purpose.
