It was my birthday a few days ago and I decided to finally get myself a guitar and all that’s left now is to figure out how to play it😅. It reminds me a lot about the challenges of software engineering. Whether it’s learning a new instrument or a new technology, the culture is the same - figure it out as you go. “Do the little until you can do the big”. It’s about being comfortable with not having all the right answers upfront, embracing the challenges and enjoying the journey of discovery. From getting your first lines of code to run to mastering your first chord progression, the process is essentially the same: try, fail, improve and repeat. Before long, it becomes second nature. Here’s to being a software engineer during the day and a rockstar at night 🎵💻 #softwareengineering

I was born to be an engineer. My life didn’t fully make sense til I sat down to write my first line of code. After that it was like the sun came out; came out and stayed out forever. I could never understand what my brain was programmed for (!) until I learned what it means to feel that a piece of code has finally made sense. I love all of the patterns and all of the logic and love how it all adds up. I love the support and camarederie that software engineers have for each other and there is nothing quite literally on earth that I love more than pairing. I love learning. I love the fact that I learn something new every single day. We all do of course but in software engineering it’s off the rails. It feels like I’ve read a whole book every single day. And for someone who can’t read like most people can can you imagine how that must feel? Because I spent all of my life trying clumsily to fit in but then I realised that I could perfectly spot patterns. Because I finally learned that my weaknesses were my strengths - that it’s OKAY to be obsessed with Alan Turing and that it’s okay to not want to make small talk and to only want to talk about serious and technical things - either that or be crying with laughter over something. Good thing I love my job so much because that means I can be talking about something I am hyper focused on all day. Good thing I am surrounded by beautiful people and lovely supportive software engineers who I love every day anyway. Because everyone’s a genius but if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree it will spend its whole life thinking it is dumb. And if you ever look down on anyone then you are doing them a disservice and you are not doing them a favour. Because everyone is brilliant. And you just have to let them show it to you.
