Grim reading! As of September 2024, 612 food-led businesses in Ireland had closed since the VAT hike in September 2023 - with a further 1000 expected by October 2025! Reasons for this include increasing food costs, increasing labor costs & the vat hike to 13.5%. The government had a chance to provide a lifeline to businesses in this sector in the recent budget, by reinstating the 9% Vat rate - but choose not too. They also increased the minimum wage for 2025 - which will again increase labor costs. The end result is the grim closure figures above. It's definitely becoming harder & harder for small businesses in Ireland to turn a profit, but not impossible - and in the arena we must stay! I would love to see more government incentives or tax breaks given to people to start their own thing (by tax breaks I mean just stop taxing the sh*t out of them). We should aggressively promote innovation & entrepreneurship - especially in the youth. New ideas, new processes, new people! Give the stars of tomorrow the tools they need to MAKE IRELAND GREAT AGAIN! Otherwise we will be left with towns & cities all looking the same - same coffee chains, same fast food chains, same supermarkets, same sh*itty clothes shops - we're already heading that way - time to turn the boats!

Ever since the hospitality VAT rate increased last September in Ireland, over 600 restaurants, cafés, and food businesses have closed down. The Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI) is urging the government to revert to the 9% VAT rate in Budget 2025 to prevent further closures. RAI CEO Adrian Cummins emphasises the "abnormal level of closures," particularly in rural areas, and calls for long-term viability instead of short-term grants. What you have heard is not the incessant grumblings of greedy publicans, restauranteurs and cafe owners. It is a plea for help from a sector of our economy that has been overwhelmingly effected by staggering increases in overhead. Seemingly unaware of the knock on effects of - 50% increase in VAT on food - 12% increase on minimum wage - 20-25% increase on cost of produce over the last 3 years (Irish Times, Thurs April 4th) - Up to 80% increase in energy costs vs a few years ago (Irish Times, Thurs April 4th) The Government appears to be ignoring the alarming number of businesses closing down on a daily basis. Adjustments to employers PRSI, according to my calculations will counteract about 3% of the increase in labour costs in an average sized restaurant. The ICOB grants, capped at €10,000 would offset approximately 25% of the increase in annual utility costs. It is also worth noting, that tens of thousands of businesses were ineligible for this grant, as their rates bills are higher than €30,000 per annum. (If your rates bill was 29,950, you get 10k. If your rates bill was 30,950, you got nothing). Bodies like Restaurants Association of Ireland, Licensed Vintners Association and Vintners' Federation of Ireland (VFI) along with their members, have and still maintain, that VAT 9 is the ONLY solution to the threat facing the hospitality industry and the thousands of jobs it creates and communities it supports. #VAT9
Another day, another closure: 'Rising costs have made it impossible' The food-led hospitality industry faces a broken model resulting in even the most well-known & well-run businesses having to close. The 9% VAT rate must be reinstated in Budget 2025 for the sector's survival. https://lnkd.in/e-7kAyGh

If you run an restaurant and takeaway in this day and age and don't use card machines or online ordering, it smells more than it ever did that you are scamming the tax. Don't do it. They will catchup with you eventually It's not worth it. It's not right. Especially when online ordering can grow your business more profit than tax scamming savings will ever make you. #hospitality #tax #restaurants

Adrian Cummins. It is astonishing that no one at government level is totting up the costs to the exchequer of each of these hundreds of closures. Can it possibly have escaped their attention that people are actually losing their jobs and that it is the independent restaurants, pubs and cafes that are supporting our food producers? Surely not? 1. Immediate loss of jobs - more people on social welfare. 2. Suppliers - another customer lost, they too employ people; where will new customers come from? . 3. Loss of another customer to our incredible producers of whom the government and Bord Bia, Fáilte Ireland are rightly proud. 4. Loss of an anchor in a community where births, birthdays, celebrations of every kind are rooted, where life long memories are made, where life long friendships are forged. Of what chain restaurant can you say the same thing, pray tell? 5. Loss of a tenant to a landlord. 6. Loss of all those taxes that all those people are paying at multiple levels to the same exchequer. 7. Every single one a loss of another shred of hope that we won't shortly look like some cities and towns in the US and UK especially, that no longer resemble a live, vibrant community rooted landscape. Having spent a week on the island of Hydra in Greece last year, it was brilliantly noticeable that there was not one chain restaurant in sight. All were small, medium and large cafes, bars and restaurants owned by Greek families showcasing the best of what Greece has to offer and who together created the richest tapestry of experience for the visitor. Where are we going wrong at a time when we have an embarrassment of riches in the production of food? Utterly and deeply depressing and discouraging. #simonharris #peterburke #closuretsunami #supportindependents
