This is an example of one of the more difficult certification challenges to eVTOLS which will carry people. At low altcutitudes below 100 feet, can safety parachutes be deployed quickly enough to provide a safe landing for the occupants? Or, can the structure be designed in a way to dissipate vertical and lateral impact forces from a 50 to 100 free fall drop?
Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. (and sometimes you cry...) A part of R&D and building new technologies is mistakes. This is our biggest mistake to date. Crashing our $500,000 drone... HOWEVER, the important part is that we learned A LOT! We have had a rough road since this occurred in 2023, but we're in a strong new position. We have PIVOTED from building drones to building payload systems for drones! Multicopters may seem innovative, but their oversized designs are fraught with danger and often just a lure for investors' money! Contrary to popular belief, unmanned helicopters are less likely to encounter such catastrophic failures. You might think, 'More complexity in helicopters means more potential malfunctions,' but that's not the case. Thanks to their central shaft and a single main rotor, helicopters don't flip over like multicopters do. They also have an added safety feature: autorotation, which allows the rotor to spin and slow down the impact force even if the engine fails.
