CRISPR Cas 9 Nobel Prize Lecture The #CRISPRCas9 technology is the talk of the town. In December 2023, the EU finally recommended the approval of the first corresponding drug, in this case for the treatment of sickle cell disease and beta-thalassemia. But this is likely just the beginning. I took this as an opportunity to revisit the Nobel Prize speech by Jennifer Doudna. Together with Emmanuelle Charpentier, she received the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this technology or method, often described as “genetic scissors”. Doudna’s speech is an exemplary case of successful #ScienceCommunication: clear, understandable, structured, with a didactically sensible use of graphical elements, without overloading it. The Past, Present, and the Future of Nobel Prizes The absence of Nobel Prize winners from Generations Z and Alpha could largely be due to their age—they simply haven’t had the time to develop the kind of long-term research careers that often lead to such recognition. Shift in academia’s emphasis on quantity over quality in publications and the growing influence of industry funding, which often prioritises practical outcomes over fundamental breakthroughs, can be an obstacle to major discoveries. Educational trends, with more focus on practical skills and broader studies, may also steer young researchers away from the deep, specialised work that typically earns Nobel Prizes. In recent years, data science has been largely shaped by industry needs, focusing on things like consumer behaviour, targeted advertising, and product development, rather than addressing wider societal challenges. The exceptions to this are areas like climate change and COVID-19 research, where data-driven approaches have been essential in tackling global problems. AI is likely to play a part in future Nobel Prizes. AI is already speeding up research in fields like physics, chemistry, and medicine, helping scientists sift through huge datasets, spot patterns, and even design new experiments or drugs. While AI might be crucial in making the next big discovery, the Nobel Prize will still be credited to the researchers using AI as a tool. Regardless of age, human creativity and innovation, enhanced by AI, will likely lead to the next wave of scientific breakthroughs. A veteran entrepreneur’s perspective. I can’t help but marvel at the incredible opportunity we've been given this week with the recent Nobel Prize shining a light on the fascinating intersection of artificial intelligence and what has long been dismissed as "junk RNA." As many of you know from your own experiences with startups, securing funding for disruptive technologies can be quite an uphill battle. The very term "disruptive" suggests that we must remain persistent and determined in pursuing our goals. For the past 30 years, it’s been a tough sell to convince investors that what was once deemed "junk" is, in fact, the operating system of life itself. But everything shifted when Professor Pääbo was awarded the Nobel Prize for his groundbreaking work on Neanderthal genes within all of us and our collective evolutionary journey as humans. This moment validated our field and opened doors for innovation and investment. As entrepreneurs, we must harness every tool at our disposal to share our message widely. ANDRZEJ MIEKUS and I recognized the significance of this 2022 moment and created a short video with Prof. Heinz Haenel that helped us secure the funds needed to advance our project. We understood the importance of being prepared to showcase our vision when the Nobel Prize spotlight turned to our area of research.
