I can only humbly accept this award on behalf of all my current and previous colleagues at Lloyd's Register, our customers, our stakeholders, IMO and peers at IACS who have all worked for many years to improve the safety performance of our industry. The truth is we still have a long way to go. The pace of change in our industry, as we strive to reduce our emissions is introducing new risks. War and conflicts are creating additional risks for our seafarers, their ships and their cargoes. So as our world seems to be getting less safe and more volatile, we need to redouble our efforts as leaders. CEOs have THE key role to play in ensuring Safety is at the top of our agendas. Companies with better safety cultures will attract and retain better customers, better people and over perform financially. If you’re looking for support to get started please do visit Together in Safety
Nicholas Brown, Chief Executive Officer, Lloyd's Register, received the 2024 #SAFETY4SEA Personality Award for his contribution to safer shipping through various roles. Congratulations! 🎉 👏 #shipping #awards #MaritimeIndustry

It’s fair to say this post has sparked some debate! For what it’s worth, I believe that acknowledgement of distinguished service at the highest/state level is important and should be encouraged and applauded. My unease with the recent honours list is not that I think CFOs are undeserving of the award, but how poorly all the other fabulous, dedicated, and hard-working staff are represented. In summary: I don’t necessarily want to see less CFOs on there, but I do 100% want to see a greater representation of the diversity of ranks and roles and people the Service employs. I wanted to check whether this most recent list was a one-off in terms of representation and discovered the following: In England and Wales alone, between June 2019 – June 2024, a total of 51 Q/KFSMs have been awarded, of which 30 have been for current or recently-retired CFOs (59% of the total). CFOs do not represent 59% of their workforce, so I am still of the opinion that representation of the Fire Service at the state level should be more diverse. I’ve also looked into the Ambulance Service figures for England and Wales over the same time period. Total Q/KAMs awarded = 39, total awarded to CEOs = 1 (3%). I didn’t post originally to “bash” the Service (one I was in for 15 years hence feeling like I could express my concerns): quite the opposite. It’s because I have had the honour of working for and with so many people who won’t seek praise or promotion necessarily but would be thoroughly deserving of their time at Windsor Castle and to have that KAM against their name, that I feel that the nominations and awards process could do so much better in helping to achieve that.
I’m going to stick my neck out on the line here, but does anyone else feel that it’s somehow inherently wrong that 100% of the KFSMs awarded today are to Chief Fire Officers? Is there genuinely no one else in the organisation worthy of the honour? Congratulations to them and all that, but it feels these days like it’s a rite of passage for CFOs, which surely defeats the object somewhat!

I cannot understate the importance of high end customer service and its importance to a company’s brand. My recent experiences with #upperdeck continue to reinforce how awful MOST companies and auction houses treat their customers in the Collectables hobby. My recent experience with #psa #collectors however reinvigorated my faith in people and that there are still a few companies who care about my business. Due to #psa outstanding customer service I have moved my ENTIRE 7 figure collection to them, and away from another company who placed ZERO emphasis on customer service, #goldin Can’t wait to get started with PSA vault. Bottom line: If you aren’t happy with the service you are receiving from your providers, SHOP around. The executive team at Upper Deck are the worst people I’ve ever dealt with in my 30 year career.
