How will the latest regulatory revisions by EASA impact the training and certification of pilots for VTOL-capable aircraft?
The EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency has published a significant revision of the Easy Access Rules for Aircrew (Regulation (EU) No 1178/2011) in December 2024. This update introduces critical requirements for issuing type ratings for manned aircraft with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities to holders of commercial pilot licenses for aeroplanes or helicopters under Regulation (EU) 2024/1111. Additionally, amendments have been made to the requirements for cruise relief co-pilots, regular updates of flight crew licensing and aero-medical standards, and simplifications for general aviation flight crew licensing as per Regulation (EU) 2024/2076.
Following the European Commission’s adoption of a comprehensive regulatory package for drones and VTOL-capable aircraft (VCA), these revisions incorporate essential changes into the Easy Access Rules for Aircrew (EAR). The updated EAR now aligns with the latest advancements in drone and VTOL technology, ensuring that aircrew training and certification standards keep pace with industry innovations.
EASA’s revised EAR for Aircrew are available in both PDF format with advanced navigation features and XML format for machine-readable content, facilitating easier access and integration. Generated through the eRules platform, these regulations will be regularly updated to reflect ongoing changes and developments in the field.
This milestone underscores EASA’s commitment to supporting the commercialization of air taxis and advancing the integration of VTOL aircraft into Europe’s airspace. By setting clear and updated standards, EASA aims to enhance safety, efficiency, and reliability in the rapidly evolving aviation sector.
How do you think these regulatory updates will influence the adoption and scalability of VTOL aircraft in Europe’s aviation landscape?
