Here is some unconventional career advice for job seekers and those considering a career change. Once you think you know what you want to do, schedule a mid-week Zoom call at 8am with as many people in the industry/company/role as possible, and see how they look and speak. Then ask yourself: "do I want to be like them?" I had a court Zoom hearing last week. It was a cattle call, meaning all the lawyers popped up one by one on the screen, waiting for the judge to appear and call their case so they could argue motions of various kinds. I have never seen so many time square boxes full of dispirited faces and, soon thereafter, voices. Perhaps it was a bad day. Perhaps it was a bad case. Perhaps it was the inability to truly sense demeanor and emotion via an internet communications platform. Nevertheless, if I had seen a video like this before law school, I likely would have run the other direction. Seeing it now, it just makes me a bit sad, because lawyering does not have to be or feel that way while acting professionally. Yet, I'm still holding out hope that many were actually happy lawyers, wearing shorts and flip flops that could not be seen on their screen. Note, I recognize I am neither the actual nor ultimate judge. That said, I believe such an experience would allow all job seekers or those considering a career change to judge for themselves.
One never wants to be a dispirited face in a time square box. I guess the happiness of not having to do a live cattle call at 8:00 am, beating traffic, and finding parking wore off?
It's a glimpse into the culture, energy, and vibe of a career path. Thanks for highlighting the importance of assessing not just the job but the people and environment too.
Getting to know people within the career you're looking into can be very insightful, it helps you know the good and the bad for a better-informed decision.
Arranging mid-week Zoom meetings bright and early is a smart way to catch people in the thick of their workday. Meeting with professionals in your desired industry is valuable advice, but if they seem less than enthusiastic, it they might have just rolled out of bed and hopped on the call!
Sounds like some valuable advice for anyone navigating their career journey. 🌟 Brian A. Hall
