Sound advice. There is also another vital key for best practices with leadership in this regard.
I have gained much from my 20+ years of management & leadership experience (military & civilian, as well as clincal & non-clinical), starting out in a new position becomes critical and a well-known best practice for newly promoted and/or transitioning-in leadership vs. managers, to conduct an initial assessment & evaluation period (time frame varies upon access, executive need, negotiation, etc.), or learning from what’s already in place with current and/or transitioning-out leadership vs. managers, resources, infrastructural planning, productivity, etc. This period is typically established to serve to stabilize the transition phase of new leadership, as long as the transition is transparent enough to work with. Not all the time does this happen, unfortunately. Every transition has different needs, with some commonalities - standard business policies & protocols, etc.
For me, especially working in the psychedelic-assisted healthcare space recently, this was AND was not new for me. My strategic strength in my role as a director in the board of directors was that of business, finance & HR strategy, development, management, analysis, advisory to the executive board member. I did not have the credentials of psychedelic-assisted therapy, and may have proven to support the non-profit towards its goal, faster and possibly with greater ease in its transition to official standing in the state of Utah.
I’ve worked MAT (medication-assisted therapy & respective clinical settings) for years - specially involving cannabis, Methadone, Suboxone, and Subutex. Significant healing & transformation can be created & maintained with effective MAT & respective, empirically-sound approaches.
In recent research, we are finding that the nervous system may have long-term therapeutic interventional need, once trauma has been sustained - MAT can provide quality to life in this area. No one case is the same - and we rely on self-report & communal validation (if consented), to aid the effort of stable goal-based change. Desired outcomes are occurring more occasions than not. This is where legal, ethical & experienced facilitation & support are critical during the treatment, integration & maintenance stages of change & healing.
MAT is a science, and it is also an art - an individualized experience with preference to healing and expression, under experienced direct care.
That being said, I believe that my strengths in leadership & MAT required an upgrade, to become the most effective leader for a like-entitiy’s purpose & nature. With that in hand, I truly believe that I can champion a new professional leadership growth & management space, clinically & non-clinically, and to fellow Vets.
Bottom line, I also made this transition, to better support our psychedelic communities, for direct & indirect care.

Many people are promoted or recruited into leadership positions without understanding the fundamental philosophy of leadership:
It’s all about people.
When you are a leader, you are no longer responsible for doing the job; you are now responsible for inspiring, coaching, mentoring and motivating your team to become the very best version of themselves, which will help them produce their very best work.
One must remember that the talents that make a person successful in a previous, non-leadership role are rarely the same ones that will make them excel as leaders. This is why we have many companies grossly over-managed and severely under-led. When a leader can inspire and empower their team to become the very best version of themselves by challenging their assumptions of what they can accomplish, they can now empower their team to believe in the impossible and produce unimaginable results to the astonishment of many.
