SermonAudio's new website changed 15K lines of code & 1K of commits/files. It uses the latest tools/technologies for the glory of God. They're also in partnership with Samaritan Ministries. For too long, society's become increasingly dependent on Big Insurance to take care of health needs (much like depending on Big Tech to broadcast sermons & Big Government to educate kids). Historically, most hospitals began not as big businesses, but as charitable extensions of the church. We should recover a more Biblical model of healthcare where an organized network of likeminded Christians can directly support one another's medical needs financially. Can we fully do this? Who knows. Churches are the cornerstone of the voluntary sector country wide. Many providing foodbanks, night shelters, hot meals, after school clubs, baby and toddler groups, youth activities etc. The ability of the Church to extend the love of Jesus is imperative to grow community in an organic and authentic way. Churches can be a lifeline to all those in their community during our most vulnerable moments. It is in this context that we must strive to have the most robust safeguarding policies and procedures in place, to stop any abuse of power in it's tracks. This independent report on Soul Survivor and it's lead pastor Mike Pilavachi underscores this. The exploration around the term 'spiritual abuse' legitimises and validates many people's experience in and around religious institutions. You often hear the term 'culture' in Churches, and this is more prevalent in Charismatic churches. This report directly examines the power (and therefore space to abuse that power) held by pastors over their congregation. In my experience, it's also in these spaces you will hear gaslighting statements of spirituality aiming to shut down any hope of valuable discussion or accountability. Terms like 'God qualifies me' are all too common. Church is a scared space, and it's specifically because of that sanctity that we should be doing everything we can to strive for the most experienced and qualified people to lead communities. Safeguarding structures should be living breathing systems, not pieces of paper collecting dust in the Parish office. Trustee boards should have their ears to then ground in governance, and not see their positions simply as honourary.
