"Calls to abolish the family policing system are often met with questions concerning the 'What about…?' 'What about children who are seriously abused? What about children in homes with substance use?' These questions, though at times well-intentioned, suggest the system is the only mechanism through which harm can be addressed." It is not. In this new series from upEND, we take on these questions and explore the pathways that move away from punishment and toward healing, mutual aid, and care. I hope you'll read and follow this series with us as we imagine and create a better future. https://lnkd.in/gWPrRMSX

Just a reminder to promote gentle parenting/caregiving practices, do what you can to know and utilize community to meet parental/caregiver needs (emotional, medical, social, educational, economic, etc.), empower parental/caregiver/human agency, reduce stress, facilitate fun, teach and respect consent and bodily autonomy, and provide experiences and environments that reduce the likelihood of abusive interactions. If the tall people are ok, the short people will be ok. This is my daily working theory to practice. It doesn’t always work, but when it does, a piece of the world improves. Happy National Child Abuse Prevention Month!

We teach children what to do in case there is a tornado or a house fire, but despite 1 in 10 children being the victims of sexual abuse by the time we are 18, we don't teach children about what to do in case if someone touches them in a way that they don't like or isn't okay with them. As part of April being National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness month we are encourage you to speak with the children in your lives about body safety. Teaching children a few body safety rules can go a long way! Here are some rules to teach! 🛑 My body belongs to me! Children have the right to say "no" to giving someone a hug or a kiss. Offer alternatives, such as giving a high five or blowing a kiss. 🛑 5 adults! There are five adults that I trust that I can talk to if I feel worried, scared, or unsure. 🛑 Early warning signs: If I have early warning signs (feeling frightened or unsafe, getting a sick tummy, or a racing heart) I must tell one of my 5 adults right away. 🛑 Secrets: I should never have secrets that make me feel bad or uncomfortable. I should tell one of my 5 adults! 🛑 Private parts: My private parts are private. No one should touch them, show me or ask me to touch theirs, or show me photos of private parts. If that happens I should tell one of my 5 adults right away! Having conversations about body safety is just as critical as teaching children to look both ways before crossing the street or wear their seat belt. Use this tips to start this important conversation! 💙 #kidstalkcac #guidancecentermi #endchildabuse #childabuseprevention #pinwheelsforprevention

Attended an insightful webinar yesterday as part of the Kidscape ‘Trauma in bullying’ launch event. *3 key takeaways* 1. Bullying is a traumatic experience, a cause of PTSD and has life long consequences. 2. It’s critical that bullying is recognised in psychological frameworks and public health discussions, (incl the NHS). Children who have been bullied need bespoke trauma-informed support. 3. Bullying must NOT be trivialised or treated as just a “normal part of growing up.” The impact statistics are staggering, with far too many young lives lost due to bullying-related trauma. Please go into all of your interactions with children from a trauma informed angle. Their daily experiences are just as valid and their lives are just as important as an adult’s.
We'd like to thank everyone who attended our launch event today for 'Trauma in Bullying' research, funded by The Mather Family Trust and conducted with the University of York. We will be sending a follow up to attendees tomorrow, but in the meantime you can read the press release here: https://lnkd.in/eMbtnmjq
