Why does AppMap’s AI software architect, Navie AI, suggest such an opinionated AI coding workflow? Application design was once a crucial first step in software development and it is an even more crucial first step for AI coding “copilots”. Back in the days of tools like Rational Rose, design-centric methodologies had developers laying out every interaction, dependency, and sequence before writing a single line of code. Rational Rose and UML made visual modeling central to how systems were architected. We treated design as the blueprint, the foundation on which code was built. But this was heavy weight and slow. Design is emerging as the new constraint in AI-powered coding. The sheer churn of lines of generated code from AI is astounding, with over 70% of AI generated code suggestions rejected. This isn’t lack of syntax, it is a lack of clear guidance for the AI to code against. That is a different kind of waste that can slow the development process down nonetheless. It is why the accelerating impact of AI coding assistants is so variable across projects of wide ranging complexity. As we said in 2022 when we launched AppMap, when developers are lost in a codebase- they need a map. And AI needs a map too. In building an AI software architect, we’re going back to first principles and inspirations, recognizing that thoughtful, but *real-time* design and implementation insights are essential to crafting robust applications with AI as the author.
