Breaking Through Blue Carbon’s Potential: Improving #FoodSecurity Through #SustainableAquaculture UMITRON breaks through blue carbon’s central role in mitigating climate risks and increasing global food security by mapping #bluecarbon to build sustainable aquacultures with the help of Planet satellite data. If Earth contains more water than land, are we maximizing its potential to reduce carbon emissions? Enter blue carbon, nature’s way of removing carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in coastal ecosystems; a natural technology that has been around since time immemorial. UMITRON, a next-generation deeptech company that develops and provides data platforms to aquafarmers, recognized blue carbon’s potential to advance a food-secure and safer blue planet. They install sustainable aquaculture using their combined expertise in #machinelearning, #IoT, and #satelliteremotesensing to achieve their vision. With the vast ocean areas and their restrictions on human activities, mapping blue carbon is not an easy feat. Collecting data is time-consuming, expensive, and labor-intensive. This gap in high-quality functional data affects the industry’s sustainable growth. Aquafarmers have accumulated data from daily operations but are constrained in applying them to actionable insights. UMITRON’s suite of services focuses on every aspect of the industry’s value chain. This approach led them to focus initially on production-focused solutions such as REMORA and CELL. These solutions tackle vital farming operations like feeding while factoring in the adverse environmental effects of these activities. On a broader level, they have tools such as PULSE, a high-resolution ocean data map with near real-time satellite imagery and historical information on water quality conditions. PULSE utilizes our satellite remote sensing capabilities and UMITRON’s powerful algorithms. This unique combination enhances the aquafarmers’ capacity to monitor surrounding waters and better understand the environmental variability around their coastal farms. UNLOCKING SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE FOR GLOBAL IMPACT While working on a blue carbon estimation project, the UMITRON team needed to identify and monitor seagrass growth in an area measuring 100 km2. They started surveying using drones but the coverage and data collected were insufficient. Therefore, they attempted to create a seagrass map from our satellite data. https://lnkd.in/dwEjggNG #aquaculture #fishfarming

Modern tech often harms the environment But IdentiFlight can protect wildlife 🦅 For years, bird collisions with wind turbines have been a real issue. In 2013, Loss et al. estimated 140,000 to 328,000 bird deaths annually from U.S. wind turbines alone. A decade later, with wind turbines multiplying globally, and even more expected as we push toward renewable energy targets, the impact on wildlife will be ever greater. Marques et al. (2014) highlight the complexity of bird behavior and the multiple factors 🌦️ weather ⚙️ turbine configuration, 🐤 species characteristics that make predicting collisions a challenge. That’s where IdentiFlight comes in. This AI-powered system detects and classifies birds, in real-time, and with 99% accuracy. It uses high-resolution cameras to track birds from 1.3 km away and issues shutdown commands when necessary. Even better? It reduces bird fatalities while keeping power generation losses to less than 1% annually What excites me most is how this technology is shifting our approach to wind energy and wildlife conservation. With IdentiFlight, we don’t have to choose. It’s not about compromise—it’s about innovation!🚀 Are you excited about the potential for AI in wildlife applications? 😃 Let me know in the comments below 👇

Exciting News from 3DEO: HABIT Project Awarded Funding! We are thrilled to announce that 3DEO has been awarded funding under the first phase of a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) programme for our ground-breaking HABIT (Harmful Algal Bloom Intelligent Twin) project. This initiative focuses on tackling harmful algal blooms in Lough Neagh, one of Northern Ireland’s most vital natural resources. In partnership with the University of Stirling, the HABIT project will utilise cutting-edge satellite imagery, advanced drone technology, and predictive models to monitor and forecast blue-green algae outbreaks. These harmful algal blooms pose a serious threat to biodiversity, water quality and the communities relying on Lough Neagh. Active Maps will bring together data from multiple sources into a single, intuitive interface, enabling seamless integration of satellite, drone, and in-situ sensor data. This will provide researchers, policymakers, and local stakeholders with actionable insights to protect Lough Neagh and its ecosystems. We extend our gratitude to the UK Space Agency, Department of Agriculture and Rural development, Northern Ireland Government, NI SPACE, and the Northern Ireland Executive for their support and investment in this critical project. Together, we are proud to contribute to the sustainability and resilience of Lough Neagh and the broader fight against climate challenges.
