Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and partners discover new ocean predator in the Atacama Trench – Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution: Characterized by darkness and intense pressure, the ocean's hadal zone seems uninhabitable, yet dozens of unique organisms call it home. Each species discovered there adds a crucial piece to the puzzle of how life has evolved and even thrives in one of Earth's most extreme environments. https://lnkd.in/erWmw4pU

Some amazing news for #marinebiodiversity CBC As It Happens host Nil Köksal interviewed marine scientist Erin Easton about a Schmidt Ocean Institute expedition that documented potentially 100 new marine species off the coast of Chile. Listen or read the interview here: https://lnkd.in/eTRxapsP Schmidt Ocean Institute Press Release and more information: https://lnkd.in/eWzUs3Ri 🌍 "The expedition explored seamounts that fall inside Chilean marine parks, as well ones that expand beyond the country's jurisdiction 'to collect data that could support the designation of an international high-seas marine protected area,' according to Schmidt Institute press release." 🌎 "Our world is changing so much right now, and we still have so much yet to explore in the oceans, and we are still discovering new species," Eaton said. 🌏 "So now is a really good time to start making decisions about protecting the biodiversity and the habitats and ecosystems in the ocean." #globalbiodiversityplan #thebiodiversityplan #biodiversity #marinebiology #marinescience

Dive into the vibrant world beneath the waves! 🌊🐠 as we explore and protect our stunning coral reefs using these cool transect methods 🌞 We lay out a measured line on the seabed and record the amazing marine life we encounter at regular intervals. Think of it as an underwater treasure hunt! 🐡 Using line transects for underwater data collection is a fundamental and effective method in marine science. This technique allows researchers to systematically record and monitor the health, biodiversity, and dynamics of coral reef ecosystems. By laying a measured line on the seabed and recording observations at regular intervals, scientists gather quantitative data on species identification, abundance, health indicators, and substrate types. Every dive is an adventure, and every discovery helps us protect our precious oceans. Let’s dive deeper and keep our reefs thriving! 🪸💙 #marinescience #coralreef #dive

🌊 Unveiling the Mysteries of the Deep Sea: New Alien-like Creatures Discovered 🌊 I am thrilled to share an extraordinary scientific breakthrough! Marine scientists have recently discovered a collection of rarely-seen, alien-looking species in the darkest depths of the Pacific Ocean's Clarion-Clipperton Zone, situated between Mexico and Hawaii. 🚀 This pioneering exploration was conducted by the UK National Oceanography Centre's SMARTEX mission, which utilized a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to venture into the abyssopelagic zone, at depths between 3,500 and 5,500 meters (11,480 and 18,045 feet). 🌊 The discoveries include a transparent sea cucumber dubbed 'unicumber,' delicate glass sponges, vibrant sea stars, corals, and even a Barbie-pink sea pig! 🌟 🔬 As marine ecologist Thomas Dahlgren of the University of Gothenburg highlighted, “These areas are the Earth's least explored. It's estimated that only one out of ten animal species living down here has been described by science.” This exploration opens new frontiers in understanding deep-sea biodiversity and the unique adaptations of these fascinating creatures. 🌍 However, this discovery also brings attention to the pressing need for conservation. The Clarion-Clipperton Zone is targeted for deep-sea mining, which could devastate these fragile marine habitats. As Dahlgren pointed out, “We need to know more about this environment to be able to protect the species living here.” This incredible discovery is a reminder of how much we still have to learn about our planet and the importance of protecting its most unexplored regions. 🛡️ #MarineScience #DeepSeaExploration #Biodiversity #Conservation #Oceanography #ScientificDiscovery #Sustainability Scientists for first time spot alien-type creatures living in darkest depths of our ocean https://lnkd.in/dPWgsx-S

This is why we need a moratorium on Deep-Sea Mining and ocean-based Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies, as every year new species are being discovered in the ocean. Do we really want to endanger species before we have discovered them?

A post to catch our new citizen scientists up to speed, here is what "Map the Giants" is all about: 1️⃣ 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿: It's hard to believe that such giants lay so well hidden, so we aim to find and map them as they are crucial part of marine ecosystems! 2️⃣ 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵: The giant may hold the secrets of resilience that could be crucial for protecting the reefs worldwide. 3️⃣ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁: As canyons, waterfalls and giant trees, giant coral colonies are monuments of nature of incredible importance and should be treated as such. Only a small percentage of the sea is protected, and the concept of protected monument of nature still needs much work in the marine environment! 🌎By liaising with official bodies, ministries, and governments we want to help change that and give these marvellous giants the title they deserve! 📝 Thank you for supporting us every day and helping us move forward with these goals, directly impacting the knowledge & conservation of our oceans! 🌊🪸💙 #MapTheGiants #CitizenScience #CoralReef #Corals #SaveCoralReefs #CoralConservation #MarineBiodiversity #ReefResilience #Biodiversity #ReefConservation
