🌊 Unveiling the Mysteries of the Deep Sea: New Alien-like Creatures Discovered 🌊 I am thrilled to share an extraordinary scientific breakthrough! Marine scientists have recently discovered a collection of rarely-seen, alien-looking species in the darkest depths of the Pacific Ocean's Clarion-Clipperton Zone, situated between Mexico and Hawaii. 🚀 This pioneering exploration was conducted by the UK National Oceanography Centre's SMARTEX mission, which utilized a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to venture into the abyssopelagic zone, at depths between 3,500 and 5,500 meters (11,480 and 18,045 feet). 🌊 The discoveries include a transparent sea cucumber dubbed 'unicumber,' delicate glass sponges, vibrant sea stars, corals, and even a Barbie-pink sea pig! 🌟 🔬 As marine ecologist Thomas Dahlgren of the University of Gothenburg highlighted, “These areas are the Earth's least explored. Voyis has worked with the Memorial University of Newfoundland on a scientific expedition to the Galápagos Islands. 🏝️ This initiative, led by Chief Scientist Katleen Robert, represents a groundbreaking effort to explore and document the enigmatic world of cold-water coral ecosystems thriving on the cliffs of this UNESCO World Heritage site. 🪸 The Galápagos Islands, renowned for their unique biodiversity, are home to a multitude of cold-water corals, including those residing in vertical habitats. These deep-dwelling corals, shrouded in mystery due to their inaccessibility, hold vital ecological significance. 🌊 The expedition, which took place from September 18th to October 19th, 2023, was equipped with advanced technology, including Voyis’ Insight Micro laser scanner, to unlock the secrets of these vertical coral reefs. 👀 Cold-water corals on cliffs have long presented challenges to researchers due to their depth and inaccessibility to ship-based sensors. What started as a routine Pristine Seas expedition turned into a historic discovery, when what appeared to be a shipwreck revealed itself as something far more remarkable: the largest coral ever documented 🪸🪸🪸🪸 📊 The numbers are staggering: 📖 Size: 112 x 105 feet (comparable to a blue whale!) 🐬 📖 Age: Estimated 300+ years 🐬 📖 Composition: Nearly 1 billion individual polyps 🐬 📖 Context: 3x larger than "Big Momma" in American Samoa 🐬 📖 Location: Solomon Islands (home to 490+ coral species) 🐬 Why This Matters to Our Field: 🔬 Historical Record: This coral is essentially a living library of three centuries of ocean conditions 🔬 Resilience Insights: Its survival in deeper waters, while shallow reefs show degradation, offers crucial adaptation data 🔬 Conservation Implications: Located in the world's second-most diverse coral region But here's the sobering context: ❗The IUCN just reported 44% of coral species are at extinction risk. ❗UNESCO projects all 29 reef-containing World Heritage sites could disappear this century under current emissions. As Enric Sala, National Geographic's Explorer-in-Residence, noted: "Despite its remote location, this coral is not safe from global warming and other human threats." That said as Eric Brown, a coral scientist with National Geographic Expeditions, points out, its survival in deeper waters might offer "a beacon of hope" for coral resilience. 🌊 Sea Cucumbers: The Ocean’s Vacuum Cleaners 🌊 Often overlooked, sea cucumbers play a vital role in maintaining the health of our oceans. As members of the echinoderm group (along with sea stars and urchins), they help recycle nutrients by feeding on organic matter from the seafloor and excreting inorganic sediment. 🐚🌱 During the recent #SalasyGomezRidge expedition, scientists explored distinct deep-sea ecosystems, discovering awe-inspiring species like glass sponges, deep coral reefs, and of course, sea cucumbers.
